SC Delhi led at half-time again, and Erwin and Figueira scored four minutes apart to give Mohun Bagan their first win

Sporting Club Delhi went into half-time ahead for the second game running on Friday night. For the second game running, they went home with nothing. Lalrinliana Hnamte gave them the lead against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the 23rd minute at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Lee Erwin equalised in the 56th, and Miguel Figueira scored the winner four minutes later.

The 2-1 win is Bagan’s first of the new Indian Super League season, and the first league win for Panagiotis Dilmperis as their head coach. Four days earlier his side had lost 1-0 in Guwahati to a stoppage-time goal from NorthEast United’s Jithin MS.

Four minutes after the equaliser

Manoj Mohammed set up Hnamte for Delhi’s goal. Bagan had done most of the attacking in Guwahati without scoring, and they went in at half-time here still waiting for their first goal of the season.

It took 11 minutes of the second half to change that. Erwin got the equaliser, and four minutes later Bagan were in front. Apuia Ralte ran through the middle of the pitch and found Figueira, who finished.

Dilmperis took both scorers off in the last 20 minutes, Erwin on 73 and Figueira on 79, and Bagan saw out the added time without letting Delhi back in.

Two leads, no points for Delhi

This is becoming a pattern for Tomasz Tchórz’s team. On the opening day they were 2-1 up at half-time against Bengaluru FC and lost 3-2, with Menno Koch scoring the winner in the 89th minute. A club that finished 12th of 14 last season has now played two good halves and lost two games.

For Bagan, the result settles a few nerves. They finished last season level on points with East Bengal and lost the title on goal difference, and losing their first two games would have been a poor start for a coach in his first year. They still have not had a clean sheet, and a team with Erwin, Figueira, Lallianzuala Chhangte and Dejan Dražić should probably not need a comeback to beat a side without a point.

Bagan’s next league game is at home to Chennaiyin FC on 26 October. Delhi go to FC Goa two days later.
