Sarri went back to the Allianz Stadium where he won a title, and Atalanta lost a third in a row

The last time Maurizio Sarri managed a team to a Serie A title, he did it at the Allianz Stadium. Two weeks later Juventus sacked him. On Sunday evening he walked back into the same ground with Atalanta and lost 2-0, which makes three defeats in a row.
A strange piece of history
Sarri won the Scudetto with Juventus in 2019-20, their ninth in a row. He was dismissed days afterwards, once Lyon knocked them out of the Champions League on away goals. Winning the league and losing the job inside a fortnight is not something many coaches have managed.
He is at Atalanta now, appointed in June on a deal that runs to 2029, in from Lazio and replacing Raffaele Palladino. Bergamo has spent a decade being the club that turns up at places like Turin and causes problems. That is not this Atalanta, not yet.
Conceição settled it before half-time
Very little happened for half an hour. Then Zeki Çelik got to the byline on the left and pulled it back, and Francisco Conceição met it first time and put it into the bottom-right corner on 28 minutes. It was his first goal since March.
Juventus had one shot on target in the opening 45 and did not need a second. They found more once the interval passed, 11 of their 14 shots coming in the second half, and Bremer headed in Edon Zhegrova’s corner at the near post on 77 minutes to end any argument.
Sarri has lost three straight
Atalanta have two wins from five and six points. They lost in Rome, lost at home to Cagliari and have now lost in Turin, and they have scored five goals in five league games. Sarri’s sides have usually needed time to look like his, so a thin September is not by itself alarming. There is still a difference between building something and not creating anything. Right now Atalanta are closer to the second.
The international break comes at a reasonable moment for him.
Juventus have conceded four all season
Luciano Spalletti’s side sit seventh on 10 points, three wins, a draw and the 3-2 defeat by Sassuolo last week. Four goals conceded in five matches is the number that stands out, and Bremer scoring one at the other end fits that shape of team.
Seventh sounds worse than it is. Roma, Inter and Lazio are all on 13 and Cagliari are a point behind them, so nobody has broken away. Three points off the lead in late September is not ground you need to make up in a hurry. Spalletti will take a clean sheet and two goals into the break happily enough.
