Real Madrid line up a 60 million euro bid for Rodri as Manchester City hold out for 80

Manchester City have a decision to make on Rodri, and not much time left in which to make it comfortably. The Spain captain has a year left on his contract, Real Madrid are preparing an opening offer somewhere between 50 and 60 million euros, and City’s asking price is 80 million. Nobody has moved yet.

A year left, and still no signature

Rodri’s deal at the Etihad runs to the summer of 2027. City put a renewal in front of him some time ago and he has not signed it, which is the detail everything else hangs off. Sky Sports’ round-up of Tuesday’s papers had City braced for a Madrid bid while still hopeful of getting the extension done, and both of those things can be true at once when a player is this close to the last year of a contract.

The reporting coming out of Spain is less equivocal. Nicolo Schira has said Madrid have agreed personal terms with Rodri on a deal running to June 2030 and are readying a first offer of 50 to 60 million euros. Sergio Valentin has reported much the same, that the player side of it is effectively done. Rodri is said to be willing to take less money than City are offering him, which tells you where his head is.

The twenty million euro gap

City want at least 80 million. Madrid have capped themselves at 60. That is a real gap rather than a negotiating pose, and it is the kind that usually gets closed by one side blinking rather than by a clever structure of add-ons.

The awkward part for City is that time is not on their side. Hold firm this summer and they keep a reigning World Cup Golden Ball winner for one more season, then watch him leave for nothing in 2027. Take 60 million now and they have sold a 30-year-old Ballon d’Or winner for less than they value him, in the first transfer window of a new manager’s tenure. Neither option is good, which is why the third one, getting the signature on the extension, is the outcome City keep talking about.

What Maresca would be replacing

Enzo Maresca took over from Pep Guardiola at the end of June on a three-year deal, and inherits a midfield built around a player who has just been named the best at a World Cup. Rodri captained Spain to the title this summer and took the Golden Ball ahead of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, adding it to the Ballon d’Or he won in 2024. He did it without scoring or assisting a single goal in the tournament, which is a fairly precise summary of what he does for a team.

That is the player City would be selling, and the reason 80 million does not look unreasonable from their side. It is also the reason Madrid have been patient. No formal bid has landed at the Etihad yet and the clubs have not agreed anything, so the summer’s biggest midfield move is still a standoff rather than a transfer. The window shuts on 1 September.
