Real Madrid agree a Diomande deal as PSG walk away with a statement
Paris Saint-Germain called the price for Yan Diomande disproportionate and pulled out. Hours later Real Madrid closed an agreement with RB Leipzig worth more than 100 million euros.

Paris Saint-Germain spent most of the summer as the club Yan Diomande was going to join. On Sunday evening they put out a statement explaining why he will not be joining them, and within hours Real Madrid had closed an agreement with RB Leipzig worth more than 100 million euros for the 19-year-old.
PSG walked away, loudly
Clubs usually lose a transfer race quietly. PSG chose the opposite, confirming to Sky Germany that they had “formally withdrawn” their interest and their bids.
“The asking transfer fee and salary demands were completely disproportionate and distortive, and PSG will not break its principles of rational financial management and squad balance,” the statement read, adding that the club would not take part in “the inflationary and manipulative games of certain player agents.”
It is an unusual thing for a club of PSG’s size to say out loud, and it lands differently coming from a club that has itself spent heavily for the best part of a decade. Diomande had already agreed personal terms in Paris. PSG’s attempt to talk Leipzig down on the fee is what unpicked it.
Madrid went back with more
Real Madrid had a bid of around 100 million euros turned down by Leipzig only days earlier, with the German club making it clear they wanted more. Madrid returned, and Fabrizio Romano reported late on Sunday that a deal had been closed for a fee in excess of that figure, with Diomande due to fly in this week for a medical and a contract running to June 2031.
One note of caution: Sky Germany has reported that some elements of the deal are still being worked through. Until the medical is done, this is an agreement rather than a signing.
Liverpool had been in the race since the spring and were not prepared to go past the 85 million pound mark. Arsenal and Manchester City both looked at him. None of them wanted him at Leipzig’s price.
A 20 million euro release clause, 12 months ago
What makes the numbers remarkable is how recent the last set were. Leipzig triggered a 20 million euro release clause at Leganes in July 2025, after a season in which Diomande started six league games for a side that went down from La Liga.
Then he scored 12 goals with eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances in his first season in Germany. In December he took three goals off Eintracht Frankfurt in 18 second-half minutes, which at 19 years and 22 days made him the second-youngest hat-trick scorer in Bundesliga history, a record untouched since 1965. He became the fourth-youngest player to reach double figures for goals in a Bundesliga season.
The World Cup did the rest. Diomande was Ivory Coast’s most dangerous attacker as they reached the knockout stage for the first time, and by the end of the group phase every big club in Europe had a file on him. A player worth 20 million euros a year ago is now worth five times that, which is either a story about Leipzig’s recruitment or about what a good tournament does to a price. Probably both.
What Madrid get
Jose Mourinho gets a right winger who runs at defenders and scores in bunches, on a contract that takes him to 24. Madrid have not been short of attacking options for years, so the interesting part will be what this signing displaces rather than what it adds. That is a question for August.
