Peter Shilton won his 125th England cap in 1990, and Harry Kane matched it with two goals against Czechia

Harry Kane scored twice and set up the other goal on his record-equalling 125th cap as England beat Czechia 3-0 at Wembley and moved within a point of the Nations League quarter-finals.

Peter Shilton won his 125th England cap in 1990, and Harry Kane matched it with two goals against Czechia

Harry Kane had a hand in all three of England’s goals against Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday night, which is a decent way to mark a 125th cap. That puts him level with Peter Shilton, whose 125 caps have been the England men’s appearance record since he won the last of them in 1990. England won 3-0, and Kane scored twice.

He can take the record outright on 12 November, when Croatia come to Wembley. Thomas Tuchel would have to leave him out for that not to happen, and I can’t see it.

Three goals, all through the captain

The first was an own goal, but Kane made it. He drifted out to the right in the 27th minute and his cross was turned into his own net by Vladimír Coufal. In the 40th minute Morgan Rogers squared it from the right and Kane finished, and England went in 2-0 up.

The third came in the 57th minute, a header from Lewis Hall’s corner. Kane was taken off late on, and Wembley stood for him.

Czechia never really threatened. England had 65 per cent of the ball and 17 shots, and the visitors did not put one of their five efforts on target.

Ninety-one goals since Lithuania

Kane’s England career began in March 2015, when he came on for Wayne Rooney against Lithuania at Wembley and headed in at the back post within 80 seconds. Tuesday’s two goals take him to 91 for his country.

“It’s right up there,” he said afterwards. “To be now at 125, it’s just an extreme privilege.” Then he steered it back to the result: “The most important thing was the victory and the win. It’s not about me, it’s about the team.”

Shilton was 40 when he won his last cap, at the 1990 World Cup. Kane is 33. If he stays fit, 126 is a formality. How far past it he goes is the better question.

One point from the quarter-finals

England have won three of their four Nations League games and scored 14 goals. The defeat was 3-2 at home to Spain on 26 September, and Spain stay three points clear at the top of the group after coming from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in Split on the same night.

Tuchel’s side are second, six points ahead of Croatia with two games left, and one more point will be enough to send them through to the quarter-finals.

Keep up with England’s Nations League campaign
