Mukasa scored twice at the club that made him, and West Ham have their first Championship win

West Ham United went into Tuesday night with two points from three Championship matches, a manager under pressure and a fixture against the side who could have gone top by beating them. They won 4-2, and the teenager who did most of the damage is on loan from Manchester City and grew up in their own academy.

Divine Mukasa scored in the 33rd and 53rd minutes at the London Stadium. Jarrod Bowen converted a penalty in the 42nd and Konstantinos Mavropanos made it four in the 64th. Marshall Munetsi pulled one back for Wolverhampton Wanderers on the stroke of half-time and Mavropanos turned the ball into his own net in the 69th, which is a strange way to complete a personal double but does not change the scoreline much.

The first win since relegation

This was West Ham’s first Championship victory since going down from the Premier League last season. Three matches had produced two points and a slide to 19th in the table. Tuesday moved them to 11th, which tells you how tight the division is four rounds in and how quickly a single result changes the view.

Nuno Espirito Santo has managed West Ham through the relegation and into the second tier, and the early weeks of this season had started to look like the ones that cost him at Nottingham Forest. He was direct about it afterwards. “We all know it was much-needed, this win,” he said. “The way we are trying to grow and to improve, there were mistakes again today that we need to correct but we were able to be dominant.”

Mukasa came back to the club that developed him

Mukasa began at West Ham, left for Manchester City, and is now back at the London Stadium on loan. Two goals in one night against a promotion rival is the sort of return a loan is supposed to produce eventually, not in the first month.

Nuno spent more of his post-match answer on what happened between the goals. “I value a lot the goal as you can imagine but more than anything was his position, the way he distributed the ball, the way he supported and defended,” he said. “He is a young player with a lot of things to improve but I’m delighted to have him.”

That is a manager talking about a midfielder rather than a goalscorer, and given West Ham’s problem this season has been control rather than finishing, it is the more useful compliment.

Wolves lost the chance to go top

Wolves would have gone to the top of the Championship with a win, and this was their first defeat under Cesar Peixoto, who replaced Rob Edwards at Molineux in June. They had the better of the opening period. Raul Jimenez had chances and Mateus Mane hit the crossbar. Then West Ham scored against the run of play in the 33rd minute and had a penalty nine minutes later.

“It was not the result we wanted, we created a lot of chances to score,” Peixoto said. “But congratulations to West Ham, they scored more goals.”

Wolves stay third. Swansea City went top instead, beating Watford 2-0 through Eom Ji-sung and Adam Idah on the same night.

Two relegated clubs, four rounds in

Both of these sides came down from the Premier League together and both spent the summer restructuring rather than rebuilding. Wolves have made the better start and are still in the promotion places. West Ham broke the Championship transfer record in mid-August, paying Celtic 22 million pounds for Arne Engels and beating the 17.5 million Ipswich Town spent on Sindre Walle Egeli a year earlier. Until Tuesday they had nothing to show for any of it.

One win does not settle anything in a 46-game season. It does mean the next away trip is a normal fixture rather than a referendum on the manager, which is not nothing when you are four matches in and 19th.
