Panagiotis Dilmperis’s first ISL game in charge of Mohun Bagan Super Giant was goalless going into stoppage time, with Bagan doing most of the attacking. Then NorthEast United’s Jithin MS scored, and the Highlanders won 1-0 in Guwahati on Monday night.
It is NorthEast’s first ISL win over Bagan since a 1-0 at the same ground on Christmas Eve 2022, when Wilmar Jordan headed the only goal.
A late goal
Jithin settled it in the first minute of added time, and NorthEast held on.
Until then, the best of the chances had been Bagan’s. Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh kept them out with a run of saves after the break.
Bagan finished last season level on points with East Bengal and lost the title on goal difference, so losing their opening game is not the start Dilmperis wanted. They go to SC Delhi on Friday. NorthEast, ninth last season, host Kerala Blasters on Sunday.
