Milan were 3-0 up on Atalanta before the hour, and Maignan had to keep Amorim’s unbeaten run going

Milan were 3-0 up just before the hour against Atalanta at San Siro on Sunday, and they still needed Mike Maignan to get them home. Gonçalo Ramos, Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila scored for Ruben Amorim’s side, Gianluca Gaetano and Nikola Krstović hit back, and it finished 3-2.

Amorim is now unbeaten in his first seven Serie A games, and the win lifted Milan to fourth on 15 points.

Two penalties for Ramos, one goal

Milan had the ball in the net on 13 minutes, but Christian Pulisic’s close-range finish was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. The lead came on 24 minutes instead. The Atalanta substitute Relja Obric blocked a Yunus Musah shot with his arm, and after a review Ramos sent Marco Carnesecchi the wrong way from the spot.

Rabiot added the second two minutes before half-time. Diego Moreira slipped him in, and he cut inside on the edge of the box and drove a low shot into the bottom corner.

VAR gave Milan a second penalty early in the second half, this time for a Thomas Kristensen handball from a Rabiot volley. Ramos stepped up again and Carnesecchi guessed right. It hardly mattered. A minute later, on 57, Rabiot flicked on a corner and Gila headed in at the back post.

Atalanta come back, Maignan stops them

Maurizio Sarri’s side looked beaten. Then Gaetano, on as a substitute, made it 3-1 on 66 minutes after Nicola Zalewski laid the ball off to him, and Krstović finished a quick counter-attack on 81 minutes to make it 3-2.

That left Milan hanging on for the last ten minutes. Atalanta’s best chance to equalise fell to Davide Zappacosta, and Maignan pulled off an outstanding save to keep it out.

Where it leaves them

Inter and Lazio lead on 19 points and Roma are third on 17, so Milan are four off the top and two behind Roma. All four of those sides are still unbeaten in the league. Fourth place may not last the night, though: Cagliari are two points behind Milan with a game in hand, and they play at Monza on Monday.

Milan came into this off a 4-0 Europa League win at RB Salzburg on Thursday, so the first hour was more of the same. The last half-hour is what Amorim will want to look at. A three-goal lead at home should not turn into a scramble.

Atalanta stay tenth with nine points. They have now lost four of their seven league games.
