Miguel Sierra scored, won a red card, and ended Deportivo’s unbeaten return to La Liga

Deportivo had gone five games without losing since coming back to La Liga after eight years away. On Wednesday night at Riazor they lost, and the man who beat them did it twice inside seven minutes: once with a finish, once by getting a Deportivo defender sent off.

A rebound, and then a studs-up challenge

The goal came seven minutes into the second half. Lucas Stassin curled a shot at Leo Román, the Deportivo goalkeeper got a hand to it but could not hold or clear it, and Miguel Sierra was there to put the rebound away. It was Sevilla’s only goal of the night and it was enough.

Seven minutes later Sierra was involved again, this time on the floor. Angeliño came through the back of him with his studs on the calf, the referee went to the monitor, and the VAR check confirmed a straight red. Deportivo played the last half hour with ten men and never looked like getting back into it.

The Angeliño part stings for anyone in Coruña. He came through Deportivo’s academy, left for Manchester City at 16 in 2013 and did not stop moving for the next 13 years: New York, Girona, Mallorca, Breda, Eindhoven, Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Istanbul, Rome. He came back to Riazor this summer on loan from Roma, with a purchase option Deportivo can take up next June. The reunion is six league games old and it has just cost his boyhood club half an hour with ten men.

The unbeaten run was always going to end

Deportivo’s story is the better one here. This is a club that was relegated from La Liga in 2018, kept falling until it hit the third tier in 2020, climbed back to the second division in 2024 and only sealed promotion in May. Two wins and three draws from their first five games back was more than anyone in Galicia had any right to expect.

The defeat leaves them seventh with nine points from six, which is still a fine return for a promoted side. Racing Santander, who came up with them, were on the end of a 7-2 at Barcelona the same night.

Sevilla are fourth, and Barcelona are next

For Sevilla this was a fourth win in six, and it leaves them fourth on 13 points, level with Atlético Madrid and separated only by goal difference, with Barcelona on 18 and Real Madrid on 15 above them. Luis García Plaza took the job in March after Matías Almeyda was dismissed, and this is his first full season in charge. A top-four place in the middle of September is not a bad place to be standing.

Sierra is the sort of player Sevilla have always produced and have not always kept. He is 22, he came through the academy, and he has started all six of his league appearances this season. His other contribution of note came on the opening weekend, when he won the penalty that turned the Rayo Vallecano game around.

The reward is Barcelona at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Saturday night, which is a 00:30 IST kick-off in the early hours of Sunday. Barcelona have won all six of their league games and scored seven against Racing on Wednesday. Sevilla have won their last two 1-0. One of those runs ends at the weekend.
