Michut’s 92nd-minute strike costs PSV two points on the opening day of the Eredivisie

PSV had roughly three quarters of the ball, a stack of corners Fortuna Sittard never came close to matching, and a 2-1 lead with 90 minutes gone at the Philips Stadion. They finished the evening with one point. Edouard Michut hit a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top corner in the second minute of stoppage time, and the Eredivisie season began with the champions dropping two at home.

Three goals after the break, and the last one arrived too late for PSV

Fortuna led at half-time. Ole Romeny scored in the 42nd minute, which was more or less against the run of everything, and PSV spent the interval knowing they had been the better side and were losing anyway.

Ryan Flamingo headed the equaliser in the 55th minute. Noah Fernandez put PSV in front in the 74th, capping a night in which he ran the midfield, completing 103 of his 110 passes and adding four tackles and seven recoveries. With a quarter of an hour to play, the champions looked like they were going to get away with a scruffy start.

Then Michut struck from distance in the 92nd. Fortuna had sat deep for most of the night and had barely threatened, which is exactly the kind of night that ends this way often enough to count as a risk rather than bad luck. PSV are 27-time Dutch champions and won last season’s title by 19 points, with 84 to Feyenoord’s 65. Opening day flattened all of that into a single point.

Romeny marks his Eredivisie return

The goal that started it came from a player worth watching for anyone following Asian football. Romeny is an Indonesia international, capped 10 times with six goals, and he is back in the Netherlands on a season-long loan from Oxford United after joining the English club from FC Utrecht in January 2025.

Fortuna signed him to replace the goals they lost when Kaj Sierhuis left this summer. Scoring against the champions in the first match of the season is a reasonable way to start repaying that.

Telstar win at NEC on the opening weekend

Elsewhere on matchday one, Telstar won 2-1 at NEC, who finished third last season. Go Ahead Eagles beat Willem II 4-1, AZ saw off ADO Den Haag 2-0, and Excelsior opened the campaign on the Friday night by winning 4-0 at Cambuur.

PSV’s next assignment is away at Excelsior, who put four past Cambuur on Friday. On the evidence of the opening weekend, that is not the free hit it might have looked in June.
