Mbeumo gave Manchester United a half-time lead at Elland Road, and Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser left Carrick with one league win in seven
Leeds and Manchester United drew 1-1 on Sunday, five days after Lisandro Martínez’s outburst, and United are on seven points from seven games.

Manchester United arrived at Elland Road on Sunday after a week in which they lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid and one of their own defenders publicly criticised the people running the club. For 45 minutes they looked like getting the result that would change the conversation. Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead before half-time, and then Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised six minutes after the restart. It finished 1-1.
That leaves Michael Carrick’s side with seven points from seven games and one league win all season. They were 13th at full-time. Leeds, on 10 points, were seventh.
Tielemans finds Mbeumo, at the second attempt
United started badly. Bruno Fernandes, used as the central attacker in another reshuffle from Carrick, was booked for a late challenge on Tarik Muharemović, and Senne Lammens had to make a good save to keep out a Nico Elvedi header.
Youri Tielemans was the one who got United going. On 27 minutes he picked out Mbeumo unmarked, and Mbeumo headed wide. Eight minutes later the move went down the right again, Tielemans crossed, and this time Mbeumo slid in to poke it home.
Martínez goes off, Leeds come on strong
Lisandro Martínez started despite the row. After the defeat in Madrid he had gone after the club’s recruitment, and sporting director Jason Wilcox in particular, before apologising and being fined. He did not come out for the second half.
Leeds were far better after the break, and it took them six minutes. Muharemović headed a corner down, Harry Maguire could not clear it, and Calvert-Lewin chested the ball down and smashed it in.
Not much happened after that. Leny Yoro got down the right and pulled the ball back for Fernandes, who dragged his shot just wide, and substitute Mason Mount sent another effort off target. Leeds finished with five shots on target to United’s three.
Two clubs heading different ways
Daniel Farke’s side are still unbeaten at home. Their only league defeat this season came at Arsenal last weekend, where James Justin had put them ahead before they lost 2-1. They also won 2-1 at Old Trafford in April, when Noah Okafor scored twice, and they started this one as favourites. A draw against a side in this state feels like two points dropped for them, even if the performance after half-time deserved more.
United’s problem is bigger. After six games they had already made their worst league start since 1986-87, when Ron Atkinson’s side took four points from their first six. Carrick does not get long to think about it. United are in Como for the Champions League on Wednesday.
