Mbappe scored three in 40 minutes, and Mourinho’s first Bernabeu night back finished 4-1

Jose Mourinho walked back out at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night as the home manager for the first time in 13 years. By the end nobody in the ground was chanting his name. Kylian Mbappe scored in the 40th minute, the 60th and the 80th, Real Madrid won 4-1, and they sit top of La Liga.

Three goals, three different suppliers

Federico Valverde made the first one. He slid a pass through the middle of the Sociedad back line five minutes before half-time and Mbappe hit it left-footed into the top corner, his first goal of the season. The lead lasted four minutes. Luka Sucic’s shot took a deflection off Alvaro Carreras on its way in, and Madrid walked off at the break level.

The second half was a different game. On the hour Jude Bellingham worked a one-two with Mbappe inside the box and the France captain finished low past Alex Remiro. Eight minutes later Bellingham won the ball back inside the Sociedad penalty area and rolled it across for Vinicius Junior to tap in. With ten minutes left Vinicius returned the favour, weighting a pass in behind the last defender, and Mbappe lifted it over Remiro.

Bellingham ended the night with two assists. Vinicius had a goal and an assist. Mbappe, who had gone through Madrid’s 2-1 win at Espanyol without scoring, now leads La Liga’s scoring charts on three.

Mourinho’s first home night back

Real Madrid announced Mourinho on 11 June on a three-year deal, ending Alvaro Arbeloa’s five months in the job. Arbeloa had himself taken over from Xabi Alonso in January. The first league game of Mourinho’s second spell was away at Espanyol on 22 August, won 2-1 by a 90th-minute goal from substitute Carlos Espi, so Wednesday was the actual homecoming. It drew 72,226 people.

The fixture was a leftover. Real Madrid and Barcelona both had their opening-weekend games pushed back because of the World Cup, which is why Madrid played a matchweek one tie four days after finishing matchweek two. Barcelona still have theirs to come.

Two games, two wins, six scored and two conceded. Sevilla and Real Betis have also won both of theirs, but Madrid’s goal difference puts them first.

Real Sociedad have not started at all

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side are bottom of the table with nothing. They lost 1-0 at Real Betis on 21 August, and Sucic’s deflected effort at the Bernabeu is the only goal they have managed in two matches. Five conceded, one scored, no points.

They kept the ball for spells and it did not count for much. Whenever Madrid wanted the pass in behind the last defender they found it, and on Wednesday they found it three times.
