Mandragora scored against the club that sold him, and Fiorentina are bottom of Serie A with one goal in three

Two minutes into the second half at the Franchi, Fiorentina were winning a football match for the first time this season. Mateo Pellegrino had scored their first goal of the season, the ground had something to shout about, and three weeks of misery looked like they might be ending.

It lasted 27 minutes. Rolando Mandragora equalised in the 74th, Ché Adams beat David de Gea in the 82nd, and Fiorentina are bottom of Serie A with three defeats from three.

Sold in the summer, back in September

Mandragora spent four years at Fiorentina. Torino bought him this summer for a reported five million euros plus add-ons, a fee that says a good deal about how the club valued a midfielder who had played through four seasons for them. He scored against them on Saturday.

Adams finished the job eight minutes afterwards, getting to the ball inside the area and beating de Gea, who at 35 is not enjoying this start. Torino go 13th. It is not a table position anyone in Turin will frame, but it is three points won from a losing one, away from home.

One goal in three matches

The numbers around Fiorentina’s start are ugly enough without any commentary. They lost 4-0 at Roma, where Donyell Malen scored a hat-trick. They lost 3-0 at home to Frosinone, a side promoted last season. Now this. Nine goals conceded, one scored, zero points, last of 20.

Fiorentina finished 15th last season and stayed up by eight points, so the alarm was already installed before any of this happened. Three rounds in, somebody has found the switch.

They sold the striker too

Part of the problem walked out of the door on deadline day. Moise Kean joined Como on loan with an obligation to buy, a deal worth up to 40 million euros, after scoring 27 goals in 59 Serie A appearances for Fiorentina. He is now Cesc Fabregas’s centre-forward at Como, who won 4-1 at Genoa on Friday.

Selling a 27-goal striker is defensible if you replace him. Fiorentina have scored once in three matches, and the one goal came from Pellegrino in a game they lost. Whatever the plan was, the first three weeks of it have produced the worst start in the division.

Torino scored twice in the last 20 minutes and took the game. Fiorentina need the next fixture, and it is only the first week of September.
