Manchester City passed on Enzo Fernandez at £120m, and have agreed 140 million euros for him instead

On 14 August Manchester City let a five o’clock deadline go by rather than pay Chelsea £120 million for Enzo Fernandez. On Tuesday afternoon, with the window closing at eleven, they agreed to pay 140 million euros for him.
The two numbers are close to the same money. The eighteen days between them cost City the pick of the summer, a fortnight of Enzo Maresca answering questions about a midfield he had sold half of, and whatever leverage they thought waiting would buy.
What has actually been agreed
Gianluca Di Marzio reported the deal at its final stage on Tuesday, with an agreement in principle between the clubs at 140 million euros before add-ons and Fernandez travelling to Manchester within hours to complete the formalities. The contract runs to 2032 with an option for a further season.
None of that is a signed transfer, and until the paperwork lands at the Premier League before the window shuts, it is not done. But there is no competing bidder left and no obvious way for it to fall over.
A record at both ends
It would be the biggest fee Manchester City have ever paid, going past the £116 million that brought Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest to the Etihad earlier in this same window. City will have set their transfer record twice in one summer.
For Chelsea it is the largest fee they have ever received. There is a symmetry in that which will not be lost on anyone at Stamford Bridge: they paid Benfica £106.8 million for Fernandez in January 2023, a British record at the time, and are now selling him for more than that after three and a half years, a Conference League and a Club World Cup. As pure accounting it is a good piece of business. As a football decision it is Chelsea handing their most expensive midfielder to a rival who wanted him badly enough to reset a record for him.
Why he wanted it
Maresca coached Fernandez at Chelsea before taking the City job this summer. Fernandez has been playing under Xabi Alonso since, and the relationship with the stands had soured well before that. Comments about liking Madrid did not help. Nor did his celebration after scoring against England in Argentina’s World Cup semi-final, which found an audience among Chelsea supporters who had not enjoyed it.
A player who wants to leave, a manager who wants him, and a selling club that had already put a price on his head in public is not a difficult transfer to predict. What was difficult was the timing, and City chose the expensive version of it.
What City’s midfield looks like now
Rodri has gone to Barcelona, Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiah, and Nico Gonzalez has agreed a move to Newcastle. Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi came in. Fernandez arrives as the senior passer in a rebuilt unit that has turned over almost entirely in one window, under a manager in his first season, with the club having spent past the point where anything short of a title looks like a return.
Chelsea now have until eleven o’clock to decide whether they replace him or bank the money. Given how the rest of their window has gone, banking it would be the surprise.
