Lewis Hall has agreed terms with Manchester United, and Newcastle have not been asked yet
United have signed off a 60 million pound bid and settled the player’s side of it. Newcastle want at least 65 million and, after the summer they have had, are in no mood to sell again.

Manchester United have done the straightforward half of a very difficult transfer. They have an agreement in principle with Lewis Hall on personal terms, reported on 1 August, and they have not yet opened talks with the club that actually owns him.
That is the whole state of play. United want Newcastle’s left-back, United have sorted out what they would pay him, and Newcastle have not been asked a question yet.
Sixty against sixty-five
The bid being prepared is worth around 60 million pounds, and it has been signed off internally at Old Trafford. Fabrizio Romano put it plainly: “Lewis Hall is on the Manchester United list, for sure, and he’s a player internally approved at Manchester United.”
Newcastle’s number is at least 65 million, and the more relevant detail is that they are not looking for a buyer. Romano’s reading is that the club have already raised a great deal of money this summer and have no need to raise more. They agreed a 90 million euro deal with Arsenal for Bruno Guimaraes, they sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for a club-record 100 million pounds and put a chunk of it into Aladji Bamba, and they have spent 30 million euros on the goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. A squad that has been picked apart in one window does not usually volunteer its 21-year-old England left-back as well.
If United do get there, Hall becomes the most expensive player they have bought this summer, ahead of the 50 million pounds they paid Chelsea for Andrey Santos.
Why Hall might be listening
Hall is 21, left-footed, and came out of Chelsea’s academy. He moved to Newcastle on loan in August 2023 in a deal carrying a 28 million pound obligation to buy plus 7 million in add-ons, which now looks like one of the better pieces of business St James’ Park has done under this ownership.
He got an England debut in November 2024 against Greece in the Nations League and started the following week in a 5-0 win over the Republic of Ireland at Wembley. Then the season turned. He lost his place at left-back to Dan Burn over the closing months, dropped further down the order, and missed out on the World Cup squad. For a 21-year-old who had been in the England set-up months earlier, that is the kind of stretch that makes a player take a phone call.
The Eddie Howe wrinkle
There is an odd sub-plot here. Hall shares an agent with Eddie Howe, which Andy Mitten of United We Stand flagged as a genuine obstacle while Howe was still in charge at Newcastle. “That was definitely an issue, but it’ll be less of an issue now,” Mitten said.
Less of an issue because Howe is gone. He stepped down on 31 July after nearly five years, a spell that brought the 2025 League Cup and Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy in 70 years. Matthias Jaissle arrived from Al Ahli days later on a four-year contract, with Newcastle paying 9.5 million pounds in compensation. The 38-year-old German won the AFC Champions League with Al Ahli in 2025 and again in 2026.
A new head coach cuts both ways for a player wondering where he stands. Jaissle has no history with Dan Burn and no history with Hall either, so the left-back slot is arguably open again. It is also possible Hall has simply had enough of waiting to find out.
What actually has to happen
United have the cheap part done and the expensive part untouched. Personal terms cost nothing to agree; the 5 million pound gap on paper matters far less than a selling club that does not want to sell, with a new manager days into the job and a season starting later this month.
