Lazio were 2-0 up at half-time, and Amorim’s three substitutes had it level by the 67th minute

Ruben Amorim watched his team lose a half of football at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday, took three players off at the interval, and had the game level again inside 22 minutes of the restart. Lazio led 2-0 at the break. It finished 2-2, and Diego Moreira scored both Milan goals in the 65th and 67th minutes after coming off the bench.

Lazio had the first half to themselves

Matteo Cancellieri scored inside ten minutes and Tijjani Noslin added the second on 39. Neither goal came against the run of play. Milan were slow to the ball and careless with it, which is not a state you survive 45 minutes in against a Gennaro Gattuso side with a two-goal lead and a home crowd.

Gattuso has been in the job since June 2026, appointed about three months after his spell as Italy coach ended with the team missing out on the World Cup. Lazio had won their first three Serie A matches under him. At half-time on Saturday they looked like a team about to make it four.

Amorim emptied the bench at the interval

Amorim did not wait for an hour and a lull to act. Moreira, Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah all came on at half-time, three changes at once, and Milan looked like a different proposition almost immediately.

It was Pulisic, playing his first match since the 2026 World Cup, who supplied the goal that changed the afternoon. His cross found Moreira at the back post, and the finish was a left-footed volley from an angle that did not obviously offer one. Two minutes later Moreira was in again, this time from close range, and the Olimpico went very quiet.

Milan bought Moreira in August and got their answer in September

Moreira arrived from Strasbourg on 19 August, a club-record sale for the French side. Two goals inside three minutes off the bench is a persuasive way to introduce yourself to a league, and it buys a new signing a great deal of patience.

Amorim gets credit for the substitutions, though it is worth asking why a side capable of that second half started the way it did. Milan have now drawn two of their four league games and not lost any of them. Unbeaten is a fine thing to be in September. Fifth is not.

Lazio stay top and will not enjoy it much

Lazio have 10 points from four matches and are still top of Serie A, which reads better than the afternoon felt. These were the first points they have dropped all season, and they dropped them from 2-0 up at home after an hour of genuine control.

Roma and Inter both sit on nine points from three games and play their fourth in the days ahead, so Lazio’s place at the top is a lease rather than a deed. Milan are fifth on eight. The gap at the head of this table is two points across five clubs, and it is September.
