Juventus had conceded one goal in three games, and a player they own scored the winner in the 94th minute

Juventus had conceded one goal in three rounds of Serie A. They conceded three in one evening at Reggio Emilia on Sunday, and the last of them was scored in the 94th minute by a player they own.

Vasilije Adzic is a Juventus player on loan at Sassuolo until June 2027. He came off the counter-attack with the game at 2-2, found himself in space inside the box that nobody had bothered to occupy, and curled a right-footed finish past Arijanet Muric. Sassuolo 3, Juventus 2, and Luciano Spalletti’s first defeat of the season.

Five goals, four of them after the 65th minute

Nico Gonzalez hit the crossbar in the second minute and the game then stayed goalless for an hour. Nemanja Matic, who is 38, split the Juventus back line with the pass that put Sebastiano Esposito through to score in the 65th.

Edon Zhegrova levelled in the 82nd after Muric spilled a cross, Randal Kolo Muani the provider. Kieron Bowie put Sassuolo back in front in the 89th from a Darryl Bakola pass. Zhegrova hit his second from the edge of the area a minute into stoppage time, left-footed, and that looked like a point rescued. Three minutes later Armand Lauriente released Adzic and it was gone.

A year to the day since his last late goal

Adzic is 20, and Juventus sent him to Sassuolo this summer on loan with an option to buy. His first goal for the club had been a 91st-minute winner from 30 yards in a 4-3 against Inter on 13 September 2025, when he was 19. Sunday’s came a year to the day later, pointed the other way.

“It is unforgettable,” he said of the goal. His parent club will remember it differently.

Spalletti blamed the chase

Spalletti was not looking for anyone else to carry it.

“It hurts because the team could’ve won it at the end, and deserved to turn it around, but clearly we lost balance and that shouldn’t happen,” he said. “With eight players going forward to attack the ball, it left huge gaps at the back.”

He called the spaces his side’s own fault while tracing them to the desire to win the match, which is the honest version of what happened. Juventus had gone level in the 91st minute and then went looking for a third goal with almost the whole team upfield. Sassuolo needed one pass to punish it.

The injury list Spalletti is working with is long. Manuel Locatelli, Jeremie Boga, Weston McKennie, Andrea Cambiaso, Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, Jeff Ekhator, Juan Cabal and Arkadiusz Milik were all unavailable at the Mapei Stadium.

Both sides now on seven points

Alberto Aquilani’s Sassuolo had four points from three games before this and were closer to the relegation places than anything else. They are level with Juventus now on seven, ninth to Juventus in eighth, each with two wins, a draw and a defeat from four matches.

For Juventus the 12-match unbeaten run across all competitions is over, and the manner of it will sit longer than the result. One goal conceded in three games, three conceded in the fourth, and the winner scored by a player on their own books.
