JJ Gabriel could leave for Spain at 16, and the Lens teenager United are scouting cannot join them until he is 18
Manchester United are struggling to keep JJ Gabriel and have scouted Mezian Mesloub as a replacement, but post-Brexit transfer rules mean the Lens midfielder cannot move to England until November 2027.

Manchester United have spent more than a week trying to change JJ Gabriel’s mind, and The Standard reported at the weekend that they are finding it increasingly difficult. talkSPORT says their recruitment staff have already scouted Mezian Mesloub at Lens extensively as one possible replacement.
The awkward part is the rulebook. The same regulations that could let Gabriel join a Spanish club at 16 stop United from signing Mesloub until he is 18.
How it got here
Gabriel is 15 and turns 16 on 6 October. He was the Under-18 Premier League player of the season last term, made his first-team debut in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August, and scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League this month. Soon after that game he asked United to cancel his registration so he could become a free agent.
His camp’s complaint, as Sky Sports reported it, is that United had plenty of chances to involve him more in pre-season and in first-team squads this season, the Champions League included, and did not. Sky said the club were shocked by the request.
Under Premier League rules, a youth registration can only be cancelled if the club, the player and a parent or carer all agree. If they cannot, the league makes a binding decision. United cannot offer him a scholarship until he turns 16, or a professional contract until he is 17.
Barcelona and the passport question
On 18 September Sky reported that Gabriel and his family were in Barcelona, with Barcelona and Real Madrid in advanced talks and Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich also interested. He has not trained with United since asking to leave.
A move abroad at 16 is normally off limits for an English player. Sky reported a belief, based on a precedent, that Gabriel could join a European club once he turns 16 if he obtains a European passport through either parent, with FIFA having to approve any deal. His father played for Ireland and his mother is Cypriot, so he is eligible to represent both, and the Irish Times reported on 17 September that an Irish passport is what makes a move to Europe possible.
Michael Carrick has said little. “I think he’s a young boy, JJ, and I think it’s important that we certainly don’t play anything out here,” the United manager said last week.
Why Mesloub is a long game
Mesloub was born in Martigues on 8 November 2009, plays for Portugal at youth level and is the son of Walid Mesloub, a former Algeria international who captained Lens. On 8 May he came off the bench against Nantes and scored five seconds later, the fastest goal on debut in Ligue 1 history. Lens won 1-0, and that result secured their Champions League place. He made his Champions League debut against Slavia Prague on 10 September.
None of that changes the date on his passport. FIFA’s Article 19 bans international transfers of players under 18. The main exception lets 16- and 17-year-olds move between clubs inside the EU and EEA, and English clubs lost access to it when Brexit took effect on 1 January 2021. Mesloub turns 18 on 8 November 2027. Until then, United can watch him as often as they like.
That is the part I keep coming back to. Gabriel’s way out runs through a European passport. United’s way of replacing him runs into the fact that England is no longer in the EU. If Gabriel does go, United will wait more than a year for the player lined up to follow him, and Lens, who got a Champions League place out of his first five seconds as a professional, have no reason to hurry.
