India draw hosts Indonesia in the first FIFA ASEAN Cup, with Pakistan one group away
The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup draw put India in a group with hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Pakistan, a late replacement for China, sit in the other group, and the two can only meet in the final.

India know their opponents for the first FIFA ASEAN Cup. The draw made on 29 July put India in Premier Division Group A alongside hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, with the tournament falling inside the FIFA international window that runs from 21 September to 6 October.
Pakistan landed in Group B with Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. That separation matters more than it usually would, because of how this tournament is built.
There is exactly one route to India against Pakistan
The Premier Division has eight teams in two groups of four, and there are no semi-finals. The winner of each group goes straight to the divisional final. Nothing else carries through.
So an India versus Pakistan tie happens only if both win their groups, and it happens in the final or not at all. India have to get past Indonesia in front of an Indonesian crowd to make their half of it. Pakistan have to finish above Thailand and Vietnam, the two highest-ranked sides in Southeast Asia, to make theirs. It is a thin thread. It is also the sort of thread that sells out a stadium.
Pakistan were not supposed to be here at all
China had the second invited slot and pulled out on 28 July, having decided that a run of Southeast Asian opposition was not the right preparation for the 2027 Asian Cup. FIFA turned to Pakistan, who accepted the same evening. The draw followed a day later.
For Pakistan that is a rare piece of luck. Their federation has been suspended by FIFA three times since 2017, the last of those bans lifted only in March 2025, and a sanctioned tournament with prize money attached does not come along often for them.
A group India can actually get out of
The July FIFA rankings put Indonesia 118th, Malaysia 136th, India 138th and Singapore 148th. Four teams inside 30 places of each other, and India sitting third of the four. This is not a group anyone is expected to walk.
Indonesia have the ranking, the home ground and a squad rebuilt around naturalised players drawn from the Dutch game, several of them regulars in Europe. Malaysia have been edging up the list. Singapore are the lowest ranked and the least likely to trouble anyone. India will look at that table and see a tournament they can win, which is not something Indian football has been able to say about a FIFA-sanctioned competition for a long while.
What is on the table
The winners of the Premier Division collect one million dollars. The Challenge Division, the six-team half of the tournament being played in Hong Kong, pays 300,000 dollars to its champions. Every participating association gets at least 125,000 dollars before any win or draw bonuses, and the full pot runs past four million.
Gianni Infantino launched the competition at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025, following the template FIFA used for the Arab Cup. The matches are official internationals, so ranking points move on them. For a side sitting 138th, points are the part that lasts longer than the prize money.
