Hamburg have not scored a goal this season, and Leipzig put five past them
Christopher Nkunku marked his return to the Red Bull Arena with a goal, and Martín Demichelis got the win he badly needed. Hamburg are still waiting for their first goal of the season.

Three matchdays into the Bundesliga season, Hamburger SV have scored no goals at all. Not one, across three matches. They have conceded 12, five of them at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday, and they sit bottom of the table with nothing on the board in any column that matters.
Leipzig needed the night more than the scoreline suggests
Martín Demichelis took the Leipzig job in the summer, replacing Ole Werner after a spell at Mallorca, and he arrived at this fixture on the back of two straight defeats in all competitions. Beating the bottom club 5-0 does not settle any argument about where his side are going. It does stop the questions for a fortnight, which in September is worth something.
The opening goal was the sort Hamburg could do nothing about. Brajan Gruda slid a pass to Ezequiel Banzuzi on the right, Banzuzi squared it, and Tidiam Gomis finished at the near post on 17 minutes. The second was entirely self-inflicted. Shafiq Nandja tried to play out from the back as the last man, gave the ball straight to Antonio Nusa, and the Norwegian put it away in the 28th minute.
Nkunku scored the goal everyone came to see
Christopher Nkunku is back at Leipzig on loan from AC Milan, with an option to buy attached, at the club where he had the best seasons of his career. He was not in the starting XI. He came on around the 35th minute when Assan Ouedraogo went off injured, and in the 74th he scored his first since returning.
That goal sat in the middle of a three-goal burst. Willi Orbán had scored the third from close range on 72 after Nusa set it up, Nkunku made it four two minutes later, and Rômulo Cardoso added a fifth on 77. Five goals, five different scorers, and Hamburg with no answer to any of them.
Hamburg’s problem is not the defence
Twelve conceded in three is bad. Zero scored in three is worse, because it means there is no version of a Hamburg match where they can dig themselves out. Every game starts as a shutout they have to break, and so far they have not come close. Leipzig, for their part, move to fifth on six points, which is exactly where a team that has won two and lost one should be.
