Gvardiol agrees a new Manchester City deal and ends Real Madrid’s pursuit

Manchester City have settled the one piece of summer business that mattered most to them. Josko Gvardiol has agreed a new long-term contract at the Etihad, a deal reported to run until 2031, and in doing so he has ended Real Madrid’s pursuit of one of the most coveted defenders in Europe. The club are expected to confirm the extension formally in the coming days.

From stalled talks to a signature

This is not how the summer looked a month ago. Back in late May the picture was murkier, with talks dragging and reports that the Croatian was open to a move, Bayern Munich among the clubs sniffing around. City needed to act, and they have, putting improved terms on the table and tying down a 24-year-old who only turns 25 next season to a contract that now stretches three years beyond the 2028 expiry he had been sitting on.

For a defender who has played left-back and centre-half at the highest level, often in the same season, that security matters to both sides. Gvardiol gets to build the next phase of his career at a club that still expects to win things. City keep a player whose age profile is exactly what a squad in transition needs.

Real Madrid move on

Real Madrid had made Gvardiol one of their defensive targets, part of a wider reshape at the back. With the Croatian off the market, they have already pivoted, completing the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea earlier in the window. It is a different kind of player and a different kind of fee, but it tells you Madrid were not going to wait around once City made their intentions clear.

That is the quiet win here for City. In a window where they have been linked with plenty of outgoings and where the Real Madrid machine tends to get what it wants, holding on to a defender of his level against that competition counts for something.

What it gives City

Gvardiol has grown into one of the first names on the team sheet, valued as much for his composure on the ball as for what he does without it. Keeping him removes a question that could have hung over the back line all season and lets the club plan around a settled defensive core rather than scramble to replace a starter at short notice.

The formal announcement is the only thing left, and once it lands, City will have done the hard part of their summer before the bigger spending even begins.

Keep up with the summer transfer window
