Gurkirat Singh’s 90th-minute header against his old club keeps Punjab FC unbeaten and Mumbai City winless

Mumbai City spent three seasons with Gurkirat Singh on their books and saw him score once in 28 appearances. On Monday night at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, he scored again, this time against them, with the 90th-minute header that rescued a point for Punjab FC.

It finished 1-1. Leandro Otormín’s penalty just after the hour had put Mumbai City ahead, and for most of the second half it looked like being enough for Manolo Márquez’s first league win at the club.

A goalless first half with work for both keepers

The first half had chances at both ends and no goals. Rishikanta Meitei tested TP Rehenesh with a long-range shot in the fourth minute, and the Mumbai City goalkeeper punched it away. Brandon Fernandes then found Arshdeep Singh in Punjab’s goal twice, the first time with a shot from outside the box that Arshdeep pushed away diving. Punjab lost Rishikanta to injury before half-time.

The penalty came out of very little. Bijoy Varghese went into a challenge on PN Noufal inside the box, caught him, and the referee pointed to the spot. Otormín sent his kick into the bottom-right corner, and a few minutes later Márquez took him and Brandon off for Wilmar Jordan and Tluanga.

The substitutes did it

Pavlos Dermitzakis had already sent on Gurkirat for Vishal Yadav shortly after half-time. After Mumbai City scored, he added Sanathoi Meetei and Arshvir Singh, and it was Sanathoi’s cross from the left that Gurkirat headed into the top corner from close range.

Punjab nearly won it in stoppage time, but Rehenesh saved from Raphaël Messi Bouli, who had scored twice in their opening win over Odisha FC.

Gurkirat joined Punjab in July from Chennaiyin, where he spent the previous two seasons. It was his first goal for the club, and he picked a good opponent for it.

Where it leaves them

Punjab are unbeaten after two games and third in the table with four points. Mumbai City have one point from two, after losing 2-1 to Churchill Brothers in Goa on the opening weekend, and Márquez is still waiting for a win.

Both play on Sunday, 25 October. Punjab go to Churchill Brothers at 5pm IST, and Mumbai City visit Kerala Blasters at 7:30pm IST.
