Greece have played Germany 10 times and never won. On Sunday night in Augsburg they arrive top of the group, and Jurgen Klopp is still waiting for his first win as Germany coach.
The Nations League match at the WWK Arena kicks off at 8.45pm local time on Sunday, 27 September, which is 12.15am IST on Monday.
Klopp’s first game went wrong before kick-off
Klopp’s debut in Amsterdam on Thursday, 24 September, was also Xavi’s first game in charge of the Netherlands, and it finished 1-1. Germany nearly won it. Felix Nmecha scored from close range in the 32nd minute after a cutback from the debutant Philipp Treu, though the Dutch were furious, because Brian Brobbey was down injured and Joshua Kimmich played on instead of putting the ball out. Virgil van Dijk had already had a goal ruled out, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen made four good saves after the break.
Then, in stoppage time, Cody Gakpo volleyed in a cross from another debutant, Ruben van Bommel. Gakpo played for Klopp at Liverpool. That one must have stung.
The injuries hurt more than the draw. Jamal Musiala was named in the starting XI and pulled out minutes before kick-off, and scans found a muscle fibre tear in his right thigh. Kai Havertz went off after about half an hour with what looked like a hamstring problem. Both have left the camp, and Klopp has called in Florian Wirtz and the Eintracht Frankfurt striker Jonathan Burkardt.
Greece came from behind in Belgrade
Greece won 2-1 in Serbia the same night, and they had to work for it. Andrija Zivkovic put Serbia ahead in the fourth minute from a Dusan Tadic cross. Christos Tzolis equalised in the 74th minute after a pass from Vangelis Pavlidis, and at the very end Kostas Tsimikas crossed for the substitute Anastasios Douvikas to head the winner.
Nobody could call it lucky. Greece had 61% of the ball and 26 shots to Serbia’s nine. This is their first season in League A, after back-to-back promotions under Ivan Jovanovic, and so far they look like they belong there.
Why Germany need this one
It has been a bad few months for Germany. They went out of the World Cup in the round of 32, beaten on penalties by Paraguay, the first shootout they had ever lost at a World Cup, and Julian Nagelsmann stepped down in July. Klopp was hired to lift the mood quickly. A home game against a side Germany have never lost to is as gentle as this group gets, with Serbia and the return game against the Netherlands still to come.
I expect Germany to win, but not by much. Greece defend well and they are full of confidence after Belgrade, while a German attack without Musiala and Havertz has less invention than Klopp would like. A draw would leave him two games without a win, and the questions would start earlier than he would want.
Serbia host the Netherlands in the group’s other game the same night.
