Glasner’s Forest led at Selhurst Park after three minutes, and Palace came from behind to beat their old manager 3-1

Oliver Glasner won Crystal Palace the FA Cup, the Community Shield and the Conference League, and on Sunday he came back to Selhurst Park in charge of Nottingham Forest. His new side were ahead after three minutes. By the hour Palace had scored three times, and they held on through a lot of Forest pressure to win 3-1, their first home league win of the season.

Daniel Muñoz, sold to Forest at the end of August, was back too. The man Palace signed to replace him had the worst possible start and still finished on the winning side.

Khalaili’s mistake, then Kamada’s lob

Anan Khalaili, who joined from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer, sent a loose header straight to Dan Ndoye in the third minute. Ndoye ran clear down the left and beat Walter Benítez.

Forest should have been further ahead by half-time. Benítez tipped over an Ndoye header, Morgan Gibbs-White hit the bar and Benítez saved from Liam Delap in the same move. Palace’s equaliser came against the run of play on 41 minutes, at the end of a quick one-touch move between Adam Wharton, Quentin Timber and Jørgen Strand Larsen. Timber found Daichi Kamada, and he lifted the ball over Matz Sels.

Then, in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time, Jefferson Lerma rose to meet a Wharton corner and the ball squirmed over the line between Sels’ legs, via Khalaili. Lerma was only playing because Takehiro Tomiyasu was injured. Replays suggested the ball may have come off Khalaili’s arm on its way in, and Forest will feel the goal should not have stood. Ndoye then wasted a clear chance to level before the break.

Pino’s rebound, and Benítez does the rest

Forest hit the post early in the second half, and Palace punished them soon after. Sels smothered a shot from Strand Larsen, and Yéremy Pino steered the rebound past a defender on the line.

Glasner’s side kept coming. Gibbs-White missed from close range, and late on Benítez made a superb save from a Delap header. At the other end Chris Richards nearly made it four, heading a Wharton corner just wide in stoppage time.

Glasner is still waiting

It was a strange sort of homecoming. Forest made more of the chances, and Benítez is the main reason they went home with nothing. Both sides had won once in their first five league games. Pierre Sage’s Palace have two wins now. Glasner, who became Forest’s fifth manager in 12 months when he was appointed in July, is still waiting for a second.

Forest have Arsenal at the City Ground next Sunday. Palace go to Brighton the same day.
