Elversberg went three up in 46 minutes on their Bundesliga debut, and the town has 13,000 people
Bayer Leverkusen were two down inside nine minutes at a 10,000-capacity ground in Saarland, and the club playing its first ever top-flight match held on for 3-2.

Nine minutes into the first Bundesliga match SV Elversberg have ever played, they were two goals up against Bayer Leverkusen. By the time the second half was a minute old they were three up. Leverkusen got two back and it still was not enough.
Elversberg 3, Leverkusen 2, on a ground with a capacity of about 10,000, which is 5,000 short of what the league normally demands.
Two goals in 60 seconds
Lukas Petkov scored in the eighth minute at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde on Saturday. Cole Campbell, the American winger Elversberg bought from Borussia Dortmund for six million euros in the summer, scored in the ninth. David Mokwa made it three a minute into the second half.
Leverkusen conceded twice before the match was ten minutes old and then conceded again before they had settled into the second half. Patrik Schick pulled one back on 77 minutes and Christian Kofane scored in the first minute of stoppage time, which turned a humiliation into a narrow defeat without changing the result.
Flekken did not hold back
Mark Flekken, Leverkusen’s goalkeeper, was not interested in framing it kindly afterwards.
“With the mentality and attitude we showed, we can’t win a game,” he said. “Mental capacity was missing. Energy was missing. Understanding of the game was missing.”
His point about conceding at the start of both halves is the one that will sting. Carles Martínez Novell, in his first competitive match as Leverkusen head coach after arriving from Toulouse in July, went the other way and called it an incredible game from the hosts. He rejected the idea that his players had taken Elversberg lightly.
A club with 13,000 neighbours
Spiesen-Elversberg, the Saarland municipality the club is named after, has a population of around 13,000. Elversberg are the 59th team to play in the Bundesliga and they arrived with a budget of 31.2 million euros, the smallest of the 18 clubs in the division.
Their stadium is a problem the league has agreed to ignore for now. The Ursapharm-Arena holds about 10,000, and Bundesliga rules ask for 15,000. Elversberg are building a new north stand that will take it to roughly 15,500, and they have an exemption to play there until spring 2027 while the work goes on.
Thirteen years from the third tier
The route here has not been quick. Elversberg first reached the third division in 2013, the same summer RB Leipzig did, and went straight back down. They returned in 2022, and this May they finished second in the 2. Bundesliga behind champions Schalke, taking 62 points from 34 games and sealing promotion on the final day with a 3-0 home win over Münster.
Vincent Wagner, in the job only since June 2025 after Horst Steffen left for Werder Bremen, saw the promotion through, and his squad is assembled the way a club with the smallest budget in the league has to assemble one. Mokwa arrived for a modest fee from Hoffenheim in January. Campbell, at six million, is the outlier.
The bookmakers have Elversberg as favourites to go straight back down. They have three points and Leverkusen have none, which is a strange way for that season to start.
