Crystal Palace have agreed a deal to sign Óscar Mingueza, the versatile Spain defender who left Celta Vigo as a free agent this summer. The move hands new manager Pierre Sage his first signing at Selhurst Park and is the club’s first business of the transfer window.
Mingueza completed a medical on Wednesday and is set to put pen to paper on a four-year contract. He had been available since his Celta deal expired at the end of June, and although the Vigo club offered him fresh terms, the 27-year-old chose to move on and try himself in the Premier League.
A free-transfer coup for Palace
Landing a full Spain international for nothing is the kind of deal that tends to age well. Mingueza came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and broke into the first team in 2020 before joining Celta Vigo in 2022, where four seasons in Galicia turned him into a dependable presence in La Liga. He has also earned senior caps for Spain along the way.
What makes him genuinely useful is his flexibility. Mingueza is primarily a centre-back but can cover at either full-back and even step into midfield, which gives Sage a squad option who fills several roles at once. For a manager settling into a new dressing room, an adaptable defender who arrives on a free is a low-risk way to start.
Sage’s rebuild begins
This is the opening move of the Pierre Sage era. The Frenchman arrived from RC Lens to replace Oliver Glasner, who walked away at the end of his contract after one of the most successful spells in the club’s history. Glasner delivered the FA Cup and then the Conference League, so Sage inherits a squad that has tasted silverware rather than one in need of rescue.
Sage’s job now is to keep that momentum without the man who created it, and beginning with a reliable, multi-position signing suggests a coach who wants his options nailed down early. More arrivals are expected at Selhurst Park, but Mingueza sets the tone: an experienced, adaptable defender who cost nothing.
