Coventry had scored once in five Premier League games, and four against Newcastle ended a 25-year wait for a home win

Coventry City had scored one Premier League goal in five games before Monday night, and it came away at Nottingham Forest. They scored four against Newcastle United at the Coventry Building Society Arena, won 4-1, and ended a wait for a home top-flight win that went back to a 1-0 against Sunderland in April 2001.

Frank Lampard’s side have now won two league games in a row after losing their first four without scoring. They climb out of the bottom three to 14th on six points. Newcastle stay 11th on eight, and a win would have taken them fourth.

A penalty inside six minutes

Newcastle had 67 per cent of the ball and 19 shots to Coventry’s nine. They were behind almost before any of that counted. Lukas Hornicek spilled a ball in his own area, scrambled to recover it and caught Sidiki Cherif, and after a VAR check Jack Rudoni sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.

Cherif, a 19-year-old summer signing from Fenerbahçe making his first Premier League start, got the second three minutes after half-time. Malick Thiaw headed a long throw only as far as the edge of the box, and Cherif swivelled and drove it low into the bottom corner for his first goal in the competition.

Botman’s strike, then two substitutes

Sven Botman was given time and space to step forward from defence and hit a shot from the edge of the area past Carl Rushworth on 70 minutes. That was as close as Newcastle got.

Eleven minutes later Joelinton tried to dribble out of his own area, Brandon Thomas-Asante took the ball off him, and Ellis Simms scored with his first touch after coming off the bench, his shot clipping Thiaw on the way past Hornicek. On 86 minutes Stephen Mfuni, another substitute, ran at the defence, beat two men and finished left-footed in off the post. Mfuni is 18, on loan from Manchester City, and the goal made him Coventry’s youngest Premier League scorer.

Coventry had six shots on target all night and scored with four of them.

Two away trips, two 4-1 defeats

Newcastle lost 4-1 at Leeds in September, Matthias Jaissle’s first defeat as their manager, and their next away game has gone the same way. “We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result,” Jaissle said. He felt the chances were there and that “the desire, the hunger, to score” was not.

Jamie Carragher, on Sky Sports, said Newcastle had been “beaten up twice” in their last two away matches. Jaissle said his young squad was no excuse. Two of Coventry’s goals started with a Newcastle player losing the ball in his own area, and 67 per cent possession does not fix that.
