Como’s first European match ended in a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig in September. Their first one away from home went the other way. Feyenoord came from a goal down to beat Cesc Fàbregas’s side 3-2 at De Kuip on Wednesday night, and the goal that won it went in off the back of Como goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
It was Feyenoord’s first Champions League win of the season, after a 5-1 defeat at Barcelona on matchday one, and Como’s first defeat in the competition. Both sides now have three points from two games.
Diao scores, then limps off
Como went ahead in the 18th minute. Jacobo Ramón played a long ball forward, and Assane Diao got the better of Javi López and beat Tjark Ernst. It cost him. Diao was hurt in the same move and went off with a muscle problem after 23 minutes.
By then Feyenoord were level. Gjivai Zechiël took the ball with his back to goal, turned and struck it from the edge of the area, two minutes after Diao’s goal. Sánchez kept it at 1-1 at half-time with two saves in stoppage time, the second from a López header at six yards.
Hadj Moussa makes the difference
Anis Hadj Moussa put Feyenoord in front seven minutes into the second half, with a low finish at Sánchez’s near post. Como should have been level soon after. Tasos Douvikas, on as a substitute, headed over from six yards in the 64th minute.
Hadj Moussa was behind the third goal as well. In the 80th minute Sánchez tipped his close-range shot onto the upright. A minute later Hadj Moussa tried again, the ball took a touch off Ramón, came back off the post and went in off the goalkeeper’s back.
Douvikas did score in the third minute of stoppage time, after Feyenoord misjudged a clearance, but there was no time left for an equaliser.
Fàbregas takes the blame
Fàbregas put some of it on himself. “We have to manage three competitions and maybe I got some choices wrong,” he said. “The problem was conceding the 1-1 straight away. In the last 30 minutes we dominated, but they deserved to win.”
He called it “our first European away game” and said playing at home and playing away “are two different worlds”. The bigger worry may be Diao. “Diao felt he couldn’t run anymore, we have to assess how he is,” Fàbregas said. Como are already without Moise Kean, who is injured.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst needed a response after the five in Barcelona. He got one, and most of it came from Hadj Moussa.
