Chelsea land Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth up to £47m
The 21-year-old Italy international joins on a seven-year contract, arriving from Atalanta after a breakout loan spell at Cagliari.

Chelsea have wrapped up their latest summer signing, confirming a deal for Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra that could rise to £47m with add-ons. The 21-year-old Italy international has put pen to a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, tying him to the club until 2033.
It is a move that had been building for a while. Palestra was widely reported to be closing in on a switch to Inter Milan before Chelsea moved in with a stronger offer, and the London club got the deal over the line while much of the football world’s attention sits on the World Cup.
What Chelsea are getting
Palestra spent last season on loan at Cagliari, and it was there that his stock climbed. He racked up 37 Serie A appearances, scored once and set up four more, doing enough as an attacking full-back to convince Premier League scouts he was ready for a bigger stage. He can operate at right-back in a back four or push higher as a wing-back, and his game is built on running power and dribbling, the kind of energy up and down the flank that modern systems lean on heavily.
At 21 he still has plenty to iron out defensively, as most full-backs his age do. But the raw materials are there, and a season of regular Serie A football rather than bench time has given him a foundation that a lot of players arriving from Italy at this age do not have.
The familiar Chelsea blueprint
The length of the contract will surprise nobody who has watched Chelsea operate over the past few years. Seven years is standard practice at this point, a structure that lets the club spread the transfer fee across a long accounting period and bank on the player’s value rising. Palestra fits the profile they keep going back to: young, quick, sellable, and cheap relative to what a proven Premier League full-back would cost.
Whether he starts right away is another question. Chelsea already have options in that area, so the smart bet is that Palestra is eased in rather than thrown straight into the XI. For a 21-year-old moving to a new country and a new league, that is probably no bad thing. Get the adaptation right and Chelsea may have found themselves a full-back for the next decade at a price that looks sharp in a market where good ones rarely come cheap.
