Chelsea have spent 408 million euros on 11 players, and two of them are 35 and 36
Morgan Rogers cost 138 million euros on his own. Jordan Henderson arrived on a free at 36, and no club in world football has spent more this summer than Chelsea have.

Chelsea have signed 11 players this summer for a combined 407.95 million euros, more than any other club in world football, and the last two names on the list arrived on a free transfer and for 5.85 million. Jordan Henderson is 36. Danny Welbeck is 35. Everyone else Chelsea bought is 28 or younger, and seven of the 11 are 23 or younger.
That is the shape of the window at Stamford Bridge, and it has not changed much in four years of this ownership. Buy young, buy a lot, sort it out later. What has changed is the size of the single cheque at the top. Morgan Rogers cost 138 million euros from Aston Villa, which is more than Chelsea spent on their next two signings put together.
Where the money went
After Rogers came Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace at 60.70 million and Marco Palestra from Atalanta at 57 million. Geovany Quenda arrived from Sporting for 50 million at 19 years old, Valentín Barco from Strasbourg for 40 million, and Emmanuel Emegha from the same club for 25 million. Pep Chavarría cost 19 million and the 18-year-old Denner came from Corinthians for 10 million.
Then the list changes character entirely. Welbeck cost 5.85 million, the teenage forward Dastan Satpaev 2.40 million, and Henderson nothing at all. Two players in their mid-thirties on a list otherwise built from prospects is not an accident. Chelsea’s squad currently numbers 38, and even with Henderson and Welbeck in it the average age is 24.1.
And what came back in
Chelsea have not simply spent. They have raised 165.65 million euros from nine departures, which still leaves them 242.30 million euros down on the summer. Marc Cucurella went to Real Madrid for 55 million. Andrey Santos went to Manchester United for 56.30 million, which makes the 22-year-old midfielder the most expensive of the sales. Trevoh Chalobah joined Como for 30 million and Tyrique George went to Everton for 21 million.
Alejandro Garnacho, Axel Disasi and Filip Jørgensen all left on loan, and Benoît Badiashile went to Napoli on a loan deal worth 3 million. A number of players who came back from loans are counted separately from the 11 signings.
Xabi Alonso took charge of his first Chelsea match on 24 August and won it 3-2 at Fulham, with Robert Sanchez conceding a near-post goal and spilling another along the way. He now has six days to work out which of these players he actually wants, because the Premier League window shuts at 11pm UK time on Tuesday 1 September. The business may not be finished either way, because Manchester City are still trying to sign Enzo Fernandez out of his midfield before the deadline.
The one signing who should not need a settling-in period is the most expensive. Rogers is 23, spent last season in the Premier League with Aston Villa, and cost more on his own than the seven cheapest arrivals combined.
