Chelsea had never been 2-0 up this early in a Premier League game, and Henderson scored twice in a 5-1 win over Bournemouth

Chelsea scored twice inside the first three minutes, and Bournemouth never really recovered. Jordan Henderson made one and set up the other, and by the time he curled in a free kick for the fifth goal on 70 minutes, Bournemouth’s afternoon at Stamford Bridge had long been over.

It finished 5-1 on Saturday, 10 October. João Pedro also scored twice and Morgan Rogers got the other, while Evanilson’s goal for Bournemouth came off a Chelsea clearance.

Two goals in 149 seconds

Henderson’s opener came in the second minute. Cole Palmer ran at the Bournemouth defence from deep, pulled the ball back to him, and Henderson hit it first time. It went in off the far post.

A minute later he was the provider. Rogers curled a shot that took a deflection off Antonio Silva’s head and looped in. Chelsea were 2-0 up after two minutes and 29 seconds, the earliest they have ever been two goals ahead in a Premier League game.

Henderson is 36, joined on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer and was playing his first home game for the club. Nobody English had scored a Premier League goal for Chelsea at an older age since John Terry against Watford in May 2017.

Bournemouth had their moments

The scoreline flatters Chelsea’s control a little. Marco Rose’s side created more, finishing with 1.46 expected goals to Chelsea’s 1.08, and Emiliano Martínez made a double save from Rayan and Ryan Christie with the score still 2-0 in the first half.

Chelsea killed the game within seconds of the restart. Pedro Neto got to the byline past Silva and cut the ball back for João Pedro to make it 3-0 in the 46th minute. Evanilson pulled one back five minutes later when Moisés Caicedo’s attempt to clear a corner struck him and went in.

João Pedro restored the three-goal lead in the 67th minute, turning in Pep Chavarría’s low cross. Three minutes after that Palmer won a free kick about 25 yards out and let Henderson take it. He bent it over the wall and past Đorđe Petrović at the near post.

What Alonso said

Xabi Alonso singled out Rogers, who joined from Aston Villa in the summer and now has four goals for Chelsea. “He is a very complete modern football player,” the Chelsea head coach said. “His availability is also very high and this is very important.”

Henderson’s free kick was no accident either. “He’s been using this international break to practice the free-kick,” Alonso said, adding that set-piece coach Austin MacPhee had told him Henderson could score one. His one reservation was the ten minutes after Bournemouth scored, when he felt the game could have got closer. “The clean sheet will come,” he said.

Chelsea go to Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 17 October.
