Chelsea had a quarter of the ball at Stamford Bridge and still won 4-3
Brighton completed 549 passes to Chelsea’s 146 and lost a seven-goal game. Xabi Alonso has two wins from two and five goals conceded.

Brighton had the ball for 74.4 per cent of Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge. They attempted 628 passes and completed 549 of them. They lost 4-3, and for an hour it was not even that close.
Chelsea finished the match with 146 accurate passes. Brighton had reached that number well before half-time. Xabi Alonso’s side were three goals up inside 32 minutes anyway, and ended the day with an expected goals figure of 2.97 to Brighton’s 1.49. Some afternoons the ball is not the point.
Three goals before Brighton had settled
Romeo Lavia scored in the fourth minute after Brighton made a mess of playing out. Ten minutes later Morgan Rogers found Pedro Neto for the second. On 32 minutes Jorrel Hato slid the ball across for Joao Pedro, who put it away from the middle of the box against the club that sold him to Chelsea for around 60 million pounds in July 2025.
The pattern did not change after that. Brighton kept the ball and Chelsea kept the space behind it, and every turnover sent somebody in blue sprinting into acres of grass. Chelsea made 38 clearances, many of them with their heads. That is a defensive shift, not a possession game, and it worked.
Yalcouye, an own goal, and a game again
Malick Yalcouye scored three minutes after Chelsea’s third, finishing from the centre of the area. The second one arrived on 63 minutes off Joao Pedro’s own boot. He had scored at one end and then turned the ball into his own net at the other, half an hour apart, in a match he was later given as man of the match for.
3-2, twenty-five minutes to go, and Stamford Bridge got nervous. Cole Palmer answered that on 74 with the best strike of the afternoon. Pascal Gross then headed in six minutes into stoppage time, with the final touch of the game, off a ball that had bounced around the six-yard box off three or four heads before it reached him. Too late to matter, and Brighton knew it.
They had 15 shots to Chelsea’s 17 and matched them for shots on target with six apiece. They also missed four big chances. Brighton have scored seven goals in two league games this season and have three points from them.
Two from two, five conceded
Alonso has six points from six, and Chelsea sit third. This was his first home league game in charge, and only his third in English football at all, having taken the job on 1 July after Bayer Leverkusen and a short spell at Real Madrid. Joao Pedro has scored in both matches, which settles an argument Chelsea fans have been having about whether he can play as a proper number nine.
The defending is the part Alonso will want back. Chelsea won 3-2 at Fulham on 24 August and 4-3 here. Five goals conceded in two games is not what Leverkusen were known for under him, and it is not going to survive many trips to good sides.
Moises Caicedo picked up another problem, too. He came on in the 68th minute having missed the opening two matches injured, and was off again by the 82nd, walking down the tunnel and clearly upset about it. Valentin Barco replaced him and was loudly booed by the away support, which is what happens to every ex-Brighton player wearing blue at the moment.
Arsenal on Sunday
Chelsea travel to the Emirates on Sunday, 6 September. Arsenal have played once, won 3-0, and have not conceded. That fixture will ask far harder questions of a back line that has now shipped five in a fortnight than Brighton’s 628 passes managed to.
