Chelsea agree a £52m deal for Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Crystal Palace for Maxence Lacroix, ending a pursuit that has run since the spring. The France centre-back went for a medical in London on 24 July, with a contract understood to run to 2032 and the official announcement expected to follow once the paperwork clears.
The fee, and what Palace made on it
The figure being reported sits around £52 million, with Sky Sports putting it a shade lower at about £51 million. Either way, Palace have done nicely. They bought Lacroix from Wolfsburg in August 2024 for an initial £18 million, gave him two seasons of Premier League football, and are selling him for roughly three times what they paid.
That is the kind of trade Selhurst Park has built its recent planning on, and it was not obvious at the time. Oliver Glasner, who managed Lacroix at both clubs, put it bluntly when he reflected on the signing: “There is Maxence Lacroix, who came from Wolfsburg, and many asked, ‘Why did you sign this player?’ I think he stepped up.”
He did. Lacroix made 55 appearances in all competitions last season and forced his way into France’s World Cup squad, playing three times at the tournament with two starts. He turned 26 in April, which puts him at the age buying clubs like most: proven, not finished.
Why Chelsea needed him
Chelsea’s back line has been rearranged rather than reinforced this summer. Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid on 15 June in a deal worth an initial €55 million, and the club have signalled they are open to talks over Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile. Take those out and the depth chart thins quickly.
Xabi Alonso, in charge since 1 July, inherits a squad that has been assembled by committee for four years and now needs someone to decide what it actually is. A quick, front-footed centre-back who defends space well suits a side that plays a high line, and pace is the first thing anyone lists about Lacroix. Sky Sports’ scouting profile led on exactly that, along with his one-on-one defending and the leadership he grew into at Palace.
He is Chelsea’s seventh signing of the window. The Lacroix fee takes their summer outlay past €300 million, the fourth time in five summers they have crossed that mark. Marco Palestra arrived from Atalanta in a deal Sky valued at £43 million, and Morgan Rogers cost £117 million from Aston Villa, a British record. Nobody at Stamford Bridge is pretending this is a quiet rebuild.
Palace start again, again
Pierre Sage took the Palace job in early July after Oliver Glasner chose not to extend his contract, arriving from Lens on a three-year deal with a Coupe de France and a Champions League qualification behind him. His first summer now involves replacing the best defender at the club.
Palace have been circling options. They looked at Chrislain Matsima at Augsburg and grew impatient with the pace of those talks, and Charlie Cresswell, Ruben Kluivert and Chibuke Nwaiwu have all been mentioned. There is also the possibility of business in the other direction, given Chelsea’s willingness to move defenders on.
Selling well and buying well are different skills, and Palace have been much better at the first than the second in recent windows. Sage has five weeks before the window shuts on 1 September to prove otherwise.
What it says about the window
A £52 million centre-back who was worth £18 million two years ago is not an outlier this summer. It is roughly the going rate for a Premier League defender in his mid-twenties with a World Cup on his record, and clubs with money are paying it without much argument.
Whether Lacroix is worth it to Chelsea depends on something the fee cannot tell you: whether Alonso can build a defence that has a shape, rather than a list of expensive names. Lacroix gives him a good starting point.
