Casemiro joins Messi at Inter Miami on a free transfer after leaving Manchester United

Casemiro has swapped Manchester for Miami. Inter Miami confirmed on Wednesday that the Brazilian midfielder has signed as a free agent after his Manchester United contract expired, ending a four-year spell at Old Trafford and taking one of European football’s most decorated defensive midfielders to Major League Soccer.

A free transfer after United moved on

Casemiro, 34, left United when his deal ran out at the end of June. The club had decided some time ago not to trigger the 12-month extension in his contract, a call that made his exit a formality long before the campaign finished. That leaves United to keep reshaping a midfield they have been trying to rebuild all summer, and it hands Inter Miami an experienced head on a free.

His new contract runs through the end of the 2027 MLS season, with the club holding an option to extend it into 2029. For a player who arrived in England with a huge reputation and then spent much of his final seasons fighting to justify it, the move offers a fresh setting. On signing, he said what still motivates him most is winning and continuing to grow.

Reunited with familiar faces

He does not arrive as a stranger. Inter Miami’s midfield already runs through Rodrigo De Paul, his old Copa America opponent, and the forward line is led by Lionel Messi, a man Casemiro spent years trying to shackle in Clasicos while he was at Real Madrid. Those meetings made him one of the most respected holding midfielders of his generation, and now he lines up alongside rather than against them.

The pull of playing with Messi has drawn a steady stream of established names to Florida, and Casemiro fits the pattern. He is not the box-to-box engine he was at his peak, but a reader of the game who can sit in front of the defence and let the creators in front of him do their work. In a league where possession is often given away cheaply, that kind of positional discipline can go a long way.

A trophy cabinet that speaks for itself

Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in August 2022, where he had been a serial Champions League winner and the anchor of one of the great modern midfields. His United years were more uneven, but not without highlights. He scored in the 2023 League Cup final, won the FA Cup in 2024, and managed nine Premier League goals in his final season, comfortably his best return in front of goal in England.

For United, this closes a chapter that never quite delivered what the fee promised. For Inter Miami, it adds another winner to a dressing room that keeps collecting them. Whether a 34-year-old midfielder can dictate the tempo of an MLS season is the question that matters now, and it is one Casemiro has spent his whole career answering in bigger arenas than this.
