Casemiro has swapped Manchester for Miami. Inter Miami confirmed on Wednesday that the Brazilian midfielder has signed as a free agent after his Manchester United contract expired, ending a four-year spell at Old Trafford and taking one of European football’s most decorated defensive midfielders to Major League Soccer.

A free transfer after United moved on

Casemiro, 34, left United when his deal ran out at the end of June. The club had decided some time ago not to trigger the 12-month extension in his contract, a call that made his exit a formality long before the campaign finished. His new contract runs through the end of the 2027 MLS season, with the club holding an option to extend it into 2029. Those meetings made him one of the most respected holding midfielders of his generation, and now he lines up alongside rather than against them.

The pull of playing with Messi has drawn a steady stream of established names to Florida, and Casemiro fits the pattern. He is not the box-to-box engine he was at his peak, but a reader of the game who can sit in front of the defence and let the creators in front of him do their work.
