Marco Rose has taken charge of Bournemouth for three Premier League matches. His team has scored first in every one of them and has yet to win any of them. According to Opta, no side had done that at the start of a Premier League season before Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park, where a two-goal lead turned into a share of the points.
Two goals up inside 35 minutes
Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead in the ninth minute, and for the next half hour the visitors looked like the team with a plan. The second arrived in the 35th minute through Malick Thiaw, who turned the ball into his own net.
Newcastle’s response came almost immediately. Harvey Barnes cut the deficit two minutes after the own goal, and a game that had been drifting away from the home side was suddenly live again. It stayed at 2-1 for the next 51 minutes.
Then Jacob Ramsey, sent on from the bench, found the finish that levelled it with two minutes of normal time left. Adrien Truffert had been booked a minute earlier, and Adam Smith picked up another Bournemouth yellow deep into stoppage time.
Newcastle are unbeaten without being convincing
Matthias Jaissle has five points from his first three league games in charge, against Liverpool, Tottenham and now Bournemouth. That is a respectable set of fixtures to come through unbeaten, and it leaves Newcastle seventh.
The performance was a different matter. Bournemouth carried the better of the play for long stretches and created enough to have settled it before Barnes gave Newcastle something to hold on to. A 2-2 draw at home after a 2-0 win at Tottenham reads well on paper. Watching it, this was a point rescued rather than a point earned.
Bournemouth keep finding new ways to drop points
Three games, three leads, two points. Bournemouth led Manchester City on the opening weekend and lost. They led Everton at home and drew. They led Newcastle by two and drew again. Two points from three games has them 15th, which flatters nobody involved.
Rose took over from Andoni Iraola, who left for Liverpool in the summer, and the squad he inherited is clearly capable of hurting good teams. Turning that into results is the part that has not arrived yet. Bournemouth have been in front in all three of their league games this season and have two points to show for it.
Newcastle’s worry is smaller, but it is there. They are unbeaten, they have a substitute who changed a match, and they have three games of evidence that the defending needs work before the fixtures get harder.
