Bengaluru FC are top of the Indian Super League after two games. They beat Chennaiyin FC 2-0 at a rain-soaked Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday, with Ryan Williams and Mihailo Perović scoring either side of half-time, and they have six points from six.
It was a very different evening from the opening day. Against SC Delhi a week earlier Bengaluru went behind, trailed at the break and needed an 89th-minute header from Menno Koch to win 3-2. This time they scored first, never let Chennaiyin level and kept a clean sheet.
Borja in both goals
Borja Martínez had a hand in both. In the 24th minute Soham Varshneya split the Chennaiyin midfield with a pass, Borja ran onto it and hit a right-footed shot that Mohammad Nawaz could only parry. Williams was first to the rebound and scored from close range.
Williams did not come out for the second half. Ashique Kuruniyan replaced him, and seven minutes after the restart he slid a through ball to Borja, who floated a cross into the box. Nawaz came off his line, and Perović finished calmly to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.
Perović should have scored much earlier. In the 11th minute Williams curled in a cross but Perović’s header from close range was saved by Nawaz.
Gurpreet’s clean sheet
Chennaiyin had their moments, and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu dealt with each of them. He saved Ramon Tanque’s header from a Mohammed Saheef cross in the 33rd minute, stopped a Prakadeswaran shot from inside the box just after the second goal, and in the first minute of stoppage time got down to a long-range effort from Brison Fernandes.
Sunil Chhetri came on for Varshneya with 20 minutes left and almost added a third. His left-footed shot from distance in the 87th minute needed Nawaz to tip it over the bar.
Chennaiyin still waiting
Clifford Miranda’s side have one point from two games, from the 1-1 draw at FC Goa on the opening day, when Irfan Yadwad put them ahead and Chiki headed Goa level from a free kick.
The schedule gives both clubs a break before the next round. Chennaiyin go to Mohun Bagan on 26 October, and Bengaluru’s next game is away to NorthEast United on 30 October.
