Betis had not played a Champions League home game since 2005, and Isco’s late penalty beat Porto 3-2 at La Cartuja

Real Betis had waited since 2005 to play a Champions League game at home. When it finally came, at La Cartuja on Wednesday night, they were 2-1 down to Porto with 20 minutes left. Cucho Hernández equalised in the 74th minute and Isco scored a penalty in the 84th, and Betis won 3-2.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have six points from two games, after coming from behind to win 3-2 at Lille on matchday one. Porto have none. Francesco Farioli’s side lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City in September, and this one got away from them late.

Abde first, then two for Porto

It was 0-0 at half-time, and Porto had a goal ruled out before the break. Betis scored two minutes into the second half. Fran García laid the ball back to Abde Ezzalzouli, who curled it in from outside the box.

The lead lasted seven minutes. Gabri Veiga beat Álvaro Valles with a free kick from about 25 yards, and it was one Valles might feel he should have kept out. Samu Aghehowa came off the bench and put Porto in front in the 61st minute, finishing a pass from Pepê.

Cucho, VAR and Isco

Two of Pellegrini’s forwards made the equaliser. Antony drifted inside and laid the ball off, and Cucho Hernández finished into the corner.

The winner came from a VAR review. In the 83rd minute Francisco Moura caught Ángel Ortiz in the area, the referee went to the monitor and gave the penalty, and Isco put it low to the goalkeeper’s left.

Porto pushed for a point at the end. Santiago Giménez, on for Pepê in the 85th minute, got his head to a ball inside the six-yard box in the fourth minute of stoppage time, and Valles stretched back to tip it round the post. Whatever he felt about the free kick, that save kept the three points in Seville.

“A very important step”

“It’s a very important step, without a doubt,” Pellegrini said. “Mentally, the team is ready. We’re a very united group with great belief in what we’re doing.”

Their next Champions League game is against Feyenoord, who beat Como 3-2 in Rotterdam on the same night. “We have six points, and our next game is against Feyenoord, who are used to playing in the Champions League,” Pellegrini said. Porto have lost both of theirs.
