Bayindir joins Celta on loan, and United’s goalkeeper department is now Lammens and a 35-year-old

Manchester United confirmed on 7 August that Altay Bayindir has joined Celta Vigo on loan for the 2026-27 season, and with that the club’s goalkeeping department has been emptied out and rebuilt inside twelve months. Celta pick up his wages for the year and hold an option to buy him next summer for around £3.5 million. United kept performance bonuses and a sell-on clause, which is the sort of paperwork you write when you expect the player to be somebody else’s problem by 2027.

Seventeen games in three years

Bayindir arrived from Fenerbahce in 2023 for £4.3 million and leaves with 17 appearances in all competitions. Six of those came last season, most of them early, before Senne Lammens took the gloves and never gave them back. The 28-year-old is a Turkey international who has spent three years being the answer to a question United kept declining to ask.

Celta finished sixth in La Liga last season, so this is not a soft landing in a mid-table side happy to rotate. If he plays there, he plays properly, which is more than Old Trafford was ever going to offer him.

Lammens ended the argument in one season

United paid Royal Antwerp an initial 21 million euros for Lammens in September 2025 and gave him a contract to June 2030. He made 32 top-flight appearances in his first campaign and was voted Premier League Signing of the Season, which for a club that had spent two years cycling through goalkeepers reads less like a good buy and more like a rescue.

Everything since has been housekeeping. Once the number one is settled at 24 with five years on his deal, every other keeper on the books becomes a wage line to justify.

Onana is back at Trabzonspor, and still United’s problem

Andre Onana rejoined Trabzonspor on loan on 3 July for a second straight season. The Turkish club pay a £1.3 million loan fee and cover his salary in full, and there is no option to buy attached. He has two years left on his United contract, so unless somebody makes an offer in the next eleven months he comes back next summer at 31, with a year to run and no route into the team.

That is the difference between the two exits. Bayindir has a price on him and a club that might pay it. Onana has a holding pattern.

The number two is 35 and cost nothing

Karl Darlow came in on a free from Leeds United, signing until June 2028 with a further year’s option. He is 35. He is also exactly what United’s revised approach to the squad calls for: an experienced keeper who will not sulk about being second choice, on wages that do not distort anything.

Read the three deals together and the shape is obvious. Michael Carrick’s squad now carries one goalkeeper it is invested in, one it can afford to have sitting on the bench, and one parked abroad on somebody else’s payroll. United spent the years after Onana’s 2023 arrival paying premium money into a position they could not settle. It is settled now, and everything around it has been priced accordingly.

What Bayindir gets out of it

He turns 29 in April, which is late enough that another year of watching would have started to cost him. Spain gives him a top-six side, a league where he arrives without three years of Old Trafford scrutiny attached to him, and a buy option low enough that Celta can make the call on how he plays rather than on money already spent.

United, for their part, get a season of clean books and the small chance that somebody else falls in love with a keeper they never trusted.
