Barcelona had won 11 in a row, and PSG lost three players to injury and still beat them 4-2

Barcelona came to Paris having won all 11 of their games this season. They left with their first defeat, beaten 4-2 by a PSG side that lost three players to injury on the night and still found two goals in the last ten minutes.

Vitinha put PSG ahead for the third time in the 81st minute, two minutes after Lamine Yamal had equalised, and Fabián Ruiz added the fourth in the 86th. PSG have now won all three of their Champions League league-phase games.

Hernández, not Digne, on the left

With Nuno Mendes injured, the expectation before the game was that Lucas Digne would get the job of handling Yamal. Luis Enrique picked Lucas Hernández at left-back instead, and Hernández ended up scoring the goal that put PSG back in front.

The night turned messy early. Ousmane Dembélé pulled up holding the back of his left thigh around the 20-minute mark and was replaced by Ferran Torres. Barcelona lost Dani Olmo soon after, with Fermín López coming on.

Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 38th minute. Yamal gave the ball away in his own half, and Doué worked space just outside the area and drove it low into the bottom corner.

Four goals in 14 minutes

Barcelona were level ten minutes after the break. Fermín slipped in Xavi Espart, the 19-year-old right-back, who drove into the box and finished. Torres hit the post for PSG, and a little later Hernández headed in a corner. It was his first goal for PSG since February 2024.

That started a 14-minute spell that settled the game. Yamal got the better of Warren Zaire-Emery and scored in the 79th minute. Vitinha took the lead back almost straight away, controlling the ball on his chest and hitting it from outside the box. Then Achraf Hakimi crossed to the back post and Ruiz tapped in.

The win came at a price. Just before the hour Khvicha Kvaratskhelia landed awkwardly after a challenge with Espart, hurt his right foot and had to be helped off, and Marquinhos went off injured around the same time. “I am not the doctor,” Luis Enrique said afterwards, calling the three injuries “the worst part of the game today.”

Flick rested Rodri with the Clásico in mind

Hansi Flick left Rodri on the bench and started Marc Bernal, and admitted Sunday’s game against Real Madrid had affected his selection “a lot”. Rodri came on after an hour.

Flick did not hide from the mistakes. “We made too many mistakes, especially in possession,” he said, before putting the result in context: “Today, in October, you cannot win titles. You win the Champions League in June.”

He is probably right about that, but it is hard to ignore what PSG did with a patched-up side. They have scored 14 goals in three league-phase games and have beaten Manchester City and Barcelona on consecutive matchdays. Barcelona still have Real Madrid at home on Sunday, and Olmo’s fitness is now a question Flick could not answer on Tuesday night. PSG host Lyon the same evening and will be waiting on scans for Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos.
