Barcelona could not get Alvarez, so they have spent 10 million euros on a striker who started three league games last season

Gabriel Jesus landed at Barcelona’s private aviation terminal on Monday afternoon, spent the evening being examined, and was due to be presented at the Camp Nou on Tuesday. Barcelona are paying 10 million euros for him. Four years ago Arsenal paid 45 million pounds.

The shape of the deal

The fixed fee is 10 million euros, with up to another 4 million in add-ons tied to performance. Sky Sports put the guaranteed part at 8.6 million pounds, which is the same number in different money. Arsenal have kept a 20 per cent sell-on clause, so if this works and somebody comes back for him in 2028, they get a fifth of it.

The contract runs to 30 June 2029. He is 29, so a three-year deal is exactly the length a club signs when it wants a solution now rather than an asset later.

He did not sound like a man arriving with reservations. “I’m very happy. Hopefully we win many titles,” he said on landing. Asked about the knee that has defined the last two seasons of his career, he answered before the question was finished. “The knee is perfect and I want to score lots of goals.”

How a 45 million pound striker became a 10 million pound one

Jesus arrived from Manchester City in 2022 and started brilliantly, 11 goals in 33 games in his first season, before the injuries began. He finishes with 32 goals in 123 appearances across four years at Arsenal, which is a respectable return for a player who has spent large parts of that period unavailable.

The knee is what did it. He went down in an FA Cup tie against Manchester United in January 2025 and lost most of the following year to it. By last season he was making three league starts, with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres ahead of him and a squad number that had stopped meaning anything.

Napoli looked at him too. Barcelona moved first, and Arsenal, who have spent this window rebuilding the front of their team, were not going to stand in the way of a wage coming off the books.

Barcelona wanted somebody else entirely

This is not the signing Hansi Flick has been asking for since June. Barcelona have spent the summer trying to buy Julian Alvarez, and Atletico Madrid have spent the summer refusing to discuss it, in language that got blunter as the weeks went on. Atletico have put the chance of selling to Barcelona at zero per cent, and nothing since has suggested otherwise. Whatever happens to Alvarez before the Spanish window shuts, it was not going to be this.

What they had in the meantime was nothing. Robert Lewandowski left this summer. So did Ferran Torres. That is both recognised centre-forwards gone in one summer, and Flick has been putting Raphinha through the middle in the meantime, which works until the day it does not.

One source described the thinking to ESPN plainly enough: Flick “preferred to bring in a No.9 if possible, even if it is not someone who will be a guaranteed starter.” That is not a ringing endorsement. It is also an honest description of a club that has run out of days.

Whether it works

There is a version of this that looks very smart in May. Jesus at his best presses like a midfielder, drops in to link play, and scores enough. Flick’s system asks a striker to defend from the front more than most, and that is the part of Jesus’s game that never depended on being explosive. If the knee holds, 10 million euros for a Brazil international who can play across the front three is the sort of deal Barcelona have not been able to afford to make for years.

There is also a version where he plays fifteen games. He has not been an established international since November 2023, and the last two seasons are a record of a player getting fit and then not staying fit. Barcelona have hedged that with a short contract and a small fee, which is the correct way to take this bet.

The English window shuts at 11pm on Tuesday, the Spanish one later the same night. Barcelona have a striker. Whether they have the one they needed is a question for about November.
