Atletico agree £34.2m for Romero, and Spurs got more for a teenager who never played

Atletico Madrid and Tottenham settled it late on Wednesday night, a week after the move was still being described in Spain as an ambition rather than a bid. Cristian Romero is going to the Metropolitano in a package worth about £34.2m with add-ons, and Spurs have kept a 15 per cent sell-on clause. The fee is the part their supporters will chew on for a while.

The number Spurs had to take

Romero cost about £42m from Atalanta in 2021. He leaves five years later for less than that, at 28, with three years still to run on a contract that was signed to keep him until 2029. Defenders that age do not usually depreciate.

Luka Vuskovic is the comparison that stings, because he never kicked a ball for the first team. Spurs signed him, sent him to Hamburg for a season, then sold him to Brighton in July for a fee that can reach £50m. Their captain, five seasons of Premier League football later, goes for less than that.

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara put the gap down to geography rather than judgement. “If we were selling him to Man Utd, we could probably get £60m-70m for him,” he said on Sky Sports’ Tottenham podcast. “But the problem is if you sell a player to Europe, they just don’t have the money that the Premier League clubs have.” Spurs were never going to test that theory in England, which brings us to the detail Tottenham fans will remember longest.

Arsenal looked, and got nowhere

Arsenal made enquiries this month about Romero as a way of adding to their centre-backs. It never became a negotiation. Spurs were not selling their captain to a Premier League side, and certainly not to that one. The two clubs have traded with each other exactly once in living memory, when Pat Jennings crossed north London in 1977 for a fee reported at £45,000.

Inter Milan had the stronger claim. They agreed roughly the same €40m package with Tottenham on 1 August, then spent close to a fortnight failing to turn it into a signature. Piero Ausilio confirmed the talks were live. What Inter could not confirm was that Romero wanted to come, and by the second week that silence was the whole story. The fee was never the obstacle.

Simeone gets the defender he has wanted for years

Atletico’s summer already had Alejandro Grimaldo, Morten Hjulmand and Lee Kang-in, who cost €35m from Paris Saint-Germain. Diego Simeone has been circling Romero for longer than any of those deals took to build. An Argentine centre-half who defends with open contempt for the striker in front of him is close to the house style at the Metropolitano, and Romero has never pretended otherwise about where he wanted to play.

The delay was accounting, not desire. Atletico needed money out before money went in, and Nahuel Molina’s move to Roma cleared this week at around €13m. Once that landed, the Romero package stopped being theoretical.

Spurs built for this weeks ago

Tottenham saw it coming. Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton for a reported £52m, Marcos Senesi came on a free from Bournemouth, and both were signed while Romero was still nominally staying. Kevin Danso and Micky van de Ven are still on the books. Selling Vuskovic only made sense if the captain was going too.

Whether Spurs are worse for it is a harder question than the fee suggests. Romero was sent off twice last season during a relegation fight that ran to the final day at Everton, then missed the end of the campaign with a knee injury. Two 17th-place finishes in a row is not a record any senior player walks away from clean, and a captain carries more of it than most.

What Atletico are buying is the Romero who plays for Argentina, where the same aggression reads as authority instead of risk. Simeone has spent the best part of fifteen years getting that version out of players other clubs had stopped trying to manage. At this price he does not need to be right for long.
