Aston Villa have agreed a deal to bring Alejandro Garnacho to Villa Park on loan from Chelsea, with the Argentina winger set to complete the move barely a year after he swapped Manchester United for Stamford Bridge.
Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports both report that the two clubs have settled terms on a loan that carries a conditional obligation to buy. The trigger attached to that obligation is described as easy to reach, so the expectation on both sides is that the deal turns permanent next summer rather than sending Garnacho back to London. The reported figure for the obligation is around 42.5 million pounds, and Villa have lined up a four-year contract for when the switch is made permanent. Garnacho has already travelled to Birmingham to complete his medical.
A quick change of direction for Chelsea
The move is a striking one given how recently Chelsea paid to sign him. Garnacho arrived from Manchester United last summer for a fee in the region of 40 million pounds, but a single season at Stamford Bridge was enough for both club and player to look for a fresh start. Chelsea’s forward line is crowded, and the club has kept adding to it, so regular minutes were always going to be hard to come by. Letting Garnacho leave on terms that would ultimately bring back more than they paid, while clearing a place in a packed squad, fits the way Chelsea have operated across this window.
It also lands only days after Chelsea agreed to pay a British record fee for an English player to sign Morgan Rogers from Villa. That deal, worth a reported 117 million pounds, reshaped both clubs’ summers, and Garnacho heading the other way takes some of the sting out of losing Rogers.
Why Villa moved
For Unai Emery, this is the latest piece of a rebuild forced by Rogers’ departure. Villa banked a huge fee for their best attacking midfielder and have already reinvested part of it, signing Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi for a club record of around 59.5 million pounds. Garnacho gives Emery a different profile, a direct wide forward who can carry the ball and stretch defences, which is close to the threat Villa lost when Rogers moved on.
The financial picture matters too. Villa are back in the Champions League and are working within the limits set by their settlement with UEFA, which means every incoming fee has to be justified and, ideally, spread across seasons. A loan with an obligation that only bites later is a tidy way to add a high-profile name now without the full outlay landing on this summer’s accounts.
A bet on potential
What Villa are backing is upside rather than a settled star. Garnacho is still young and has flashes of quality that few wingers in the league can match, but his end product has been uneven and his season at Chelsea did little to change that. Emery has a strong record of coaxing more out of players who arrive with a point to prove, and a winger keen to relaunch his career after a stop-start year has every reason to buy into that. If it clicks, Villa will have found an attacking upgrade at a manageable price. If it does not, the shape of the deal at least buys them a season to find out before the fee is due.
