Aston Villa went into Wednesday night without a home win this season. They came out of it with the biggest win in the club’s history in major European competition, beating Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park to make it two wins from two in the Champions League league phase.
Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley scored twice each. Johan Manzambi got the first, and Tammy Abraham, on as a substitute, got the last.
Three up by half-time
The opener came from a corner in the 12th minute. Manzambi’s shot took a deflection off Milan Škriniar, the Fenerbahçe captain, and left Ederson stranded. The Turkish side had their moments before Villa pulled clear: Zion Suzuki saved well from Vedat Muriqi, and Oğuz Aydın hit the crossbar.
Jackson then scored twice in eight minutes. Boubacar Kamara put him through for the second goal on 31 minutes, and Barkley set up the third on 39. Villa sold Ollie Watkins in the summer, and Jackson, who played for Unai Emery at Villarreal, already has three goals in two Champions League games.
Barkley takes the penalty
Manzambi won a penalty in the 68th minute with Jackson on two goals. Barkley took it and scored. “Yeah, I wanted to take it, but there are rules,” Jackson told TNT Sports afterwards. “The most important thing is we win, but hopefully next time I’ll get the hat-trick.”
Barkley’s second came four minutes later, a left-footed shot that took a deflection on the way in. Abraham, who had replaced Jackson, finished from close range in the 90th minute after a pass from Alysson, another substitute.
“We needed it”
Emery did not pretend the margin was fair. “They did not deserve 6-0 but for us it was very important how we achieved the first win at home,” he said. “I am delighted for the first win at home. We needed it.”
The Premier League has been much harder going. Villa drew 2-2 with Brentford at Villa Park on 10 October and were 16th after six games, with five points and one league win. In Europe they look like another team. They began the league phase with a 3-2 win at Club Brugge, and they have now scored three first-half goals in both of their Champions League games.
It was Fenerbahçe’s heaviest defeat in the Champions League. Mason Greenwood was booed by the home crowd every time he touched the ball, and İsmail Kartal apologised to the club’s supporters afterwards, calling the score unacceptable and blaming his side’s passing mistakes.
