Four games into the season, Arsenal have conceded one goal. Brighton have scored 13. They meet at the Amex on Saturday evening, 7:30pm IST, and the two records do not obviously fit in the same match.
Arsenal have won all four, which nobody except Manchester City has managed, and they sit top. Brighton are fifth on seven points with a goal difference better than the leaders’, which tells you most of what you need to know about how their month has gone.
Arsenal have barely been scored on
The Arsenal numbers are the more extreme of the two. Eight goals scored, one conceded, four wins. They opened the season by beating Coventry 3-0, won 1-0 against Aston Villa, beat Chelsea 2-1, and went to Sunderland last Saturday and won 2-0 without letting a shot past. The Chelsea game is the only one in which anyone has scored against them.
Winning 1-0 and 2-0 is not the same team that steamrolled sides in previous seasons, and Arsenal supporters have noticed. The margins are narrow. They are also, so far, always on the right side.
Brighton have played four different matches
Brighton’s season reads like four separate teams turned up. They beat Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend at home. A week later they lost 4-3 to Chelsea. They drew 1-1 at home to Leeds. Last Sunday they went to Coventry and won 5-0.
Thirteen goals in four league games is the sort of return a side gets when it commits bodies forward and accepts what comes back. Five conceded, four of them in one afternoon against Chelsea, is the bill for it. The 5-0 at Coventry was the most complete version: clean sheet, five goals, an away ground where nothing went wrong.
Which version decides it
The interesting bit is that both sides are unusual in ways that cancel out. Arsenal have been winning tight games without needing many goals. Brighton have been winning loose ones by scoring plenty. Whichever pattern holds for 90 minutes on Saturday will probably take the points.
On current evidence the away side is the harder one to break down and the home side is the harder one to keep quiet. Arsenal have conceded once in four attempts at stopping people, and Brighton have not yet run into a defence this tight.
