Araujo went from Barcelona captain to fifth choice, and Liverpool got him for nothing up front

Liverpool confirmed Ronald Araujo’s arrival on Monday, and the terms tell you how badly they wanted it done. The loan runs to 30 June 2027. Barcelona receive no fee for it. Liverpool cover his wages, and Araujo took a pay cut so the numbers worked. There is an option to buy at the end of the season, set at 55 million euros, with nothing obliging Liverpool to use it.

The whole thing took four days. Marca had the story on Friday, the clubs agreed it the same day, and Araujo flew to Merseyside, passed a medical and signed inside roughly twenty-four hours. He has taken the number 33.

Fifth choice at a club he captains

Barcelona were not shopping him around. Araujo joined their B team on 29 August 2018, was promoted to the first team for the 2020-21 season, and has since made 213 appearances, scored 14 goals and won eight trophies. He is one of the club captains. In January 2025 he signed a contract running to June 2031, which was supposed to settle the question of his future for the rest of his career.

What changed was the pecking order. Pau Cubarsi became the fixed point of Hansi Flick’s defence, and Araujo slid behind him, behind Eric Garcia, behind Andreas Christensen, behind Gerard Martin. He started about half of Barcelona’s league games last season and once in the Champions League. Flick was reported to be treating him as the fifth centre-back in the building. For a 27-year-old with 213 games and an armband, that is not a rotation problem, it is an exit sign.

Liverpool’s centre-back list is mostly a treatment room

Andoni Iraola inherited a defence that has been coming apart by subtraction all summer. Ibrahima Konate ran his contract down and left for Real Madrid on a free in June. Joe Gomez picked up a muscle injury against Sunderland at the end of July and was written off for the start of the season within days. Giovanni Leoni has still not played since tearing his ACL on his Liverpool debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup on 23 September 2025, and while he is the closest of the long-term cases to returning, closest is not available. Conor Bradley has been out with a knee problem since January.

That leaves Virgil van Dijk, and Jeremy Jacquet, who is 21, joined from Rennes on 1 July in a deal worth up to 60 million pounds, and has been handled carefully in pre-season with discomfort the club has not put a name to. Asking a rookie to partner Van Dijk for a title challenge is a plan. Asking him to do it with no cover behind him is a gamble, and Liverpool have just stopped taking it.

What a body in the squad does not fix

Twice in the last ten days Liverpool have gone two goals up and lost. Leeds turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 win at Soldier Field in Chicago on 2 August. Monaco did something similar at Anfield on 9 August, winning 3-2 with a header from a corner in the closing minutes, which made it a losing start at home for Iraola.

Iraola put it down to fitness, and in the second week of August, after a summer in which plenty of his players went deep into a World Cup, he has a case. But the goals that hurt came from set pieces, and set-piece defending is a question of organisation and appetite rather than lung capacity. Araujo is a serious aerial defender and a physical one, which helps. He is not a coaching session, and the pattern that cost Liverpool those two matches is a coaching problem before it is a personnel one.

Newcastle first, the option later

Iraola’s first competitive match in charge is at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August, kicking off at 4.30pm in England and 9pm in India. Araujo should be available for it, which is most of the point of moving this quickly rather than letting the deal drift toward the 1 September deadline.

The 55 million euro question waits until next summer. If Araujo plays 35 games and Liverpool’s defence steadies, it looks cheap for a defender in his prime who cost nothing to borrow. If he sits behind Jacquet once everyone is fit, Barcelona get back a captain they never wanted to lose, one year older and with four years still on his deal. Neither club has committed to anything, which is the reason this was easy to agree.
