Adeyemi joins Barcelona from Dortmund as Flick gets his pace man

Barcelona have completed the signing of Karim Adeyemi, bringing the Germany forward to Catalonia from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth an initial 22 million euros. The club set the paperwork and medical in place this week, with Adeyemi lined up to be presented after agreeing a contract that runs until June 2031.

The numbers behind the move

The base fee is 22 million euros, with a further 7 million euros available to Dortmund in performance-related add-ons. That takes the potential value of the transfer to 29 million euros, a figure that looks modest for a 24-year-old with pace to burn and well over a hundred appearances behind him. Dortmund have protected themselves against a future windfall by holding on to a sell-on stake, so they will bank a slice of whatever Barcelona receive if the forward moves on again.

For a club that has spent two summers wrestling with LaLiga’s spending limits, the structure matters as much as the headline price. Barcelona have leaned on lower up-front fees and bonus-heavy deals to stay inside the league’s controls, and the Adeyemi package fits that pattern rather than breaking it.

Why Flick wanted him

The pull towards Barcelona runs partly through Hansi Flick. The coach handed Adeyemi his senior Germany debut back in 2021, and he has long rated the forward’s ability to attack space in behind. Adeyemi is left-footed and comfortable off either flank, quick enough to stretch a high defensive line and direct enough to run at a set block when the game slows down.

That profile answers a specific need. Flick’s Barcelona press high and play with a defensive line pushed up the pitch, a system that lives or dies on runners who can punish the gaps it leaves. Adeyemi gives him another gear in transition and a different kind of threat to the technical wide players already on the books.

A four-year Dortmund chapter closes

Adeyemi arrived at Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022 and leaves with a return of 36 goals across his time at Signal Iduna Park. His most recent season was among his busiest, and there were stretches where his end product finally caught up with the raw speed that always marked him out. Injuries and consistency questions dogged parts of his Dortmund spell, which is part of why the fee sits where it does.

For Dortmund, cashing in on a player entering the final years of his contract, while keeping a stake in his next sale, is sound business. For Barcelona, it is a bet that a change of setting and a coach who knows him well can turn a talented, streaky winger into a reliable one. If it comes off, 22 million euros will read as a bargain.
