How many teams are in ISL 2026-27?
Thirteen: Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC, Churchill Brothers, East Bengal, FC Goa, Inter Kashi, Kerala Blasters, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Mumbai City FC, NorthEast United, Odisha FC, Punjab FC and Sporting Club Delhi. Churchill Brothers are new to the ISL, having taken over Jamshedpur FC’s licence. Mohammedan were relegated at the end of 2025-26.
When does ISL 2026-27 start?
On 10 October 2026. Bengaluru FC host Sporting Club Delhi at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium at 5pm IST, and FC Goa play Chennaiyin FC at Fatorda at 7:30pm IST. The season runs until May 2027, and most matches are played from Friday to Sunday, at 5pm or 7:30pm IST.
How many matches does each team play?
Twenty-four in the league stage, home and away against each of the other 12 clubs. That makes 156 league matches, and the playoffs take the full season to 163.
Who is the ISL champion, the Shield winner or the Cup winner?
For 2026-27, the Shield winner. The club that finishes top of the table after the league stage wins the League Winners’ Shield, is recognised as the official champion and normally takes India’s AFC Challenge League slot. If that club is not eligible, the slot passes to the best eligible club. The top six then play for the ISL Cup, which is a separate trophy.
How many teams qualify for the ISL playoffs?
Six. The playoffs return this season after being left out of the shortened 2025-26 campaign, and the top six in the final table go through.
What happens when two teams finish level on points?
Under the rules the ISL has used in recent seasons, the head-to-head record between the tied teams decides it first: the points they took off each other, then the goal difference in those matches. Overall goal difference and total goals scored only come in after that.
Is there relegation from ISL 2026-27?
Not for the 13 clubs playing. Diamond Harbour won promotion as 2025-26 Indian Football League champions but were barred from the ISL after failing to pay their participation fee. They are placed at the bottom by default and will play in the Indian Football League in 2027-28.
Who are the defending ISL champions?
East Bengal. They won the 2025-26 title, their first ISL crown, in a shortened single round-robin season with no playoffs. East Bengal and Mohun Bagan Super Giant both finished on 26 points, and East Bengal took it on goal difference.
