Lionel Messi is 39, in his fourth season at Inter Miami, and under contract until 2028. In July he led Argentina to a World Cup final and lost it, and he has still not said whether he is finished with the national team. He has said that Inter Miami will be the last club of his career.

He is also, by most estimates, a dollar billionaire — though “most estimates” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and this page is largely about why.

Lionel Messi’s net worth in 2026

Estimates cluster in a wide band. Forbes puts him at around USD 1.1 billion; other trackers put him nearer USD 850 million. At the rate of 14 August 2026 (USD 1 = INR 95.43) that is a spread of roughly INR 10,497 crore down to INR 8,112 crore.

A quarter of a billion dollars is a strange amount for the world’s best-documented athlete to be uncertain about. The reason is specific, and it is worth understanding before you trust any single figure.

Why the estimates differ by USD 250 million

Almost the entire gap comes down to one asset that Messi does not currently own.

His Inter Miami contract reportedly includes an option to acquire an equity stake in the club after he retires. That is a right to buy something in the future, not a holding today. Trackers that price that option into his balance sheet get to a figure above USD 1 billion. Trackers that count only what he owns now land closer to USD 850 million. Neither is being dishonest; they are answering different questions.

The second variable is his Adidas arrangement, a lifetime deal signed in 2017 that pays royalties on merchandise rather than a flat fee. Royalty streams compound, and valuing one means forecasting sales for the rest of his life and beyond. Reasonable people produce very different numbers.

So: treat USD 1.1 billion as the top of a range that has real assumptions inside it, not as a measurement.

The one footballer’s salary that is actually published

Here is what makes Messi genuinely unusual. Almost every wage figure in football is a press report that no club has confirmed. Messi plays in the one league that publishes them.

The MLS Players Association’s 2026 salary guide lists him on a USD 25 million base salary and USD 28,333,333 in guaranteed compensation — roughly INR 239 crore and INR 270 crore. That is not an estimate. It is a published figure, from the players’ union, on the record.

And here is the twist that matters for every other number on the internet. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has said the club actually pays Messi USD 70-80 million a year once revenue-sharing and equity arrangements are counted — about two and a half times the published salary.

Think about what that means. The single most transparent wage in world football understates the real cost by roughly 2.5 times. Every unpublished figure you read about every other player is a guess laid on top of a system that hides this much even when it is trying to be open.

His pay rose sharply for this deal. The previous guide had him on USD 12 million base and USD 20.4 million guaranteed, before an extension signed in October 2025 took the contract through to 2028.

What Forbes says he earns in a year

Forbes estimated Messi’s 2026 earnings at USD 140 million, or about INR 1,336 crore — USD 70 million on the field and USD 70 million off it, an exactly even split.

That symmetry is unusual. Most footballers lean heavily one way: Neymar earns nearly three times more off the pitch than on it, while a player at the peak of a big-club contract is usually the other way round. Messi at 39 is one of the very few whose playing income and commercial income are the same size.

Two of the three biggest contracts of his career were never disclosed by anyone, which is the ordinary state of affairs in European football. He left Barcelona in 2021 when the club could not register a new contract under La Liga’s salary rules, and left PSG on a free in 2023.

Messi has been with Adidas since 2006 and signed a lifetime extension in 2017, reported at around USD 25 million a year plus royalties. It is the anchor of his commercial portfolio and the asset that makes his long-term earnings hardest to value, because it does not stop when he does.

Beyond that he has carried long-running deals across drinks, payments, telecoms and consumer electronics, and launched his own clothing line, The Messi Store, in 2016. His arrival in Major League Soccer also came with revenue-sharing arrangements tied to league broadcast and merchandise partners — an unusual structure that is part of why his real Inter Miami income is so far above his listed salary.
