Sunil Chhetri’s net worth in 2026: what the estimates say, and why none of them are verified

Sunil Chhetri turned 42 on 3 August 2026 and is still playing. He is still scoring, too — he became the oldest goalscorer in Indian Super League history at 41, and he has signed another one-year extension at Bengaluru FC that takes him through the 2026-27 season.

What he is worth is a harder question than it looks, and this page is honest about why: for an Indian footballer, almost none of it is published anywhere.

Sunil Chhetri’s net worth in 2026

Published estimates put Chhetri’s net worth somewhere between INR 50 crore and INR 100 crore — roughly USD 5.2 million to USD 10.5 million at the rate of 14 August 2026 (USD 1 = INR 95.43). Older figures circulating from 2024 put him nearer INR 8 crore.

That is not a range. That is a guess with a decimal point moved. The top estimate is more than twelve times the bottom one, and every version of it traces back to the same handful of unsourced aggregator pages copying each other.

Why nobody actually knows what an Indian footballer earns

This is worth spelling out, because it applies to every Indian football salary you will ever read.

Indian Super League clubs do not publish player salaries. There is no players’ union releasing a salary guide, no league-mandated disclosure, and no Forbes list that reaches down to Indian football. Chhetri has never disclosed his contract, and Bengaluru FC have never confirmed a figure.

Compare that with Major League Soccer, where the players’ association publishes every contract. That is why we can state Lionel Messi’s salary to the dollar — USD 28,333,333 guaranteed for 2026 — and why we cannot do the same for the most decorated footballer India has produced. It is not that Chhetri’s finances are unusually secret. It is that Indian football publishes nothing at all.

The INR 1.5 crore club salary figure is the one to be most careful with. It has been repeated unchanged across the internet for years, through multiple contract renewals, a league title and several extensions. A number that never moves is usually a number nobody has re-checked.

The retirement that happened twice

Most pages about Chhetri still describe him as retiring in June 2024. That is only the first half of the story.

He announced his international retirement on 16 May 2024 and played what everyone assumed was his last match for India on 6 June 2024, a goalless World Cup qualifier against Kuwait at a packed Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

Then, on 6 March 2025, he reversed it. At 40, at the request of the new India head coach Manolo Marquez, he returned for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign. He played on into the autumn, and his actual final appearance came on 14 October 2025, a 2-1 defeat to Singapore. When India’s qualification hopes ended, so did his international career, for good, in November 2025.

The comeback added exactly one goal to his total — the difference between the 94 that most pages still quote and the 95 he actually finished on.

What the record actually says

Chhetri retired as India’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, with 95 goals in 157 appearances, a rate of 0.61 a game. That places him fourth on the all-time list in men’s international football.

Bengaluru FC: the numbers that are actually documented

His club record is far better evidenced than his finances, because clubs do publish appearances and goals.

At Bengaluru FC, Chhetri has made 318 appearances and scored 134 goals with 26 assists across all competitions — club records for both appearances and goals. He has captained them to seven major trophies: two I-League titles, two Federation Cups, the Indian Super League title, a Super Cup and a Durand Cup.

He began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002 and made his senior India debut against Pakistan in June 2005, which means he has now been a professional footballer for twenty-four seasons.

The 2026-27 ISL season, which he will play in, restarts on 4 September with 13 clubs.

Endorsements

Most of Chhetri’s income is reckoned to come from endorsements rather than football, which is normal for an Indian athlete outside cricket. Over his career he has been associated with Puma, whom he signed a three-year deal with in 2019, along with Pepsi, Tata Motors and Iodex among others.

The scale is worth keeping in perspective. • A car collection reported to include an Audi A6 (around INR 56 lakh), a Toyota Fortuner (INR 47 lakh), a Kia Seltos (INR 16 lakh) and a Mahindra Scorpio (INR 14 lakh).

Add those up and the visible assets come to roughly INR 4.3 crore — which sits oddly against a net worth estimate of INR 50 crore or more, and is a reminder that the rest of any such figure is investments and savings nobody outside his family has seen.
