Messi and Yamal: two Barcelona generations meet in the World Cup final

Messi is 39 and probably saying goodbye. Yamal is 19 and just getting started. The World Cup final puts two players from the same club lineage on opposite sides.

Messi and Yamal: two Barcelona generations meet in the World Cup final

Look at the two team sheets for the World Cup final and one contrast jumps out before a ball is kicked. Lionel Messi will line up for Argentina at 39. Lamine Yamal will start for Spain at 19. Twenty years separate them, and on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium they stand on opposite sides of the same story.

Messi has said little about his future, but almost nobody expects him to be at another World Cup. This has the feel of a last act. He is already set to become the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup final, and he arrives having dragged Argentina here almost single-handedly at times. Both goals in the semi-final win over England came from his boots, two assists that broke English hearts in the closing minutes.

The teenager who has not needed the spotlight

Yamal’s route to the final has been quieter than anyone expected. At Euro 2024 he burst onto the senior stage as a 16-year-old and left with the young player of the tournament award. This summer has been different. He has one goal and no assists across the tournament, and Spain have reached the final on the strength of a deep attack rather than one teenager pulling every string.

That is not a criticism so much as a curiosity. Spain look like the best team in the competition, and they have got here without needing their most talked-about player to carry them. For Yamal, still only 19, the final is the stage to change the conversation. He is among the youngest players ever to reach a World Cup final, and a big performance would announce him on the one night guaranteed to be watched everywhere.

A Barcelona thread runs through it

There is a neat symmetry in the matchup. Messi is the greatest player Barcelona have ever produced, the boy from Rosario who grew up at La Masia and rewrote the record books. Yamal is the academy’s current jewel, the one the club hopes will carry that standard for the next decade. They never shared a dressing room, since Messi left in 2021 and Yamal broke through in 2023, but the line from one to the other is easy to trace.

For one of them, Sunday could be the perfect ending. For the other, it could be the beginning of everything. Argentina want to defend the title they won in 2022, and Spain want to add the world crown to the European one. Somewhere in the middle of all that are two players from the same club lineage, one closing his story and one just opening his.

The final kicks off at 00:30 IST early on Monday. Indian fans who stay up will not just be watching Spain against Argentina. They will be watching the game hand over from one generation to the next, live.
